An investor is planning to build an event arena with up to 22,000 spectators at Munich Airport.

Resistance to the project is growing in Munich - there are plans to build an event arena in the city.

Munich

- The hall planned by the Freising investor SW Munich Real Estate in the west of Munich Airport has never had a particularly large number of friends.

It was not until April that Olympiapark GmbH strictly rejected the project - it was unpleasant competition for the Olympiahalle, said managing director Marion Schöne.

Event Arena at Munich Airport: Unpleasant competition for the Olympiahalle

Only the CSU city council group has officially positioned itself with a motion against the Event Arena on Freising.

According to a motion to the city council, the city of Munich should speak out against the sale of the airport grounds on the Munich Airport GmbH supervisory board and thus block the hall.

There are obviously reasons for this initiative: As our newspaper found out, the Munich economic department is planning its own event arena in the Olympiapark - "of a size that Munich is still lacking," says an insider.

Speaker Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU) did not want to comment yesterday with reference to ongoing discussions with the governing parties.

According to reports, there are plans for the site of the old ice rink.

Event arena planned in the Olympiapark - "in a size that Munich is still missing"

The background is apparently that Ion Tiriac, ex-manager of Boris Becker, would like to relocate the men's tennis tournament Madrid Masters to Munich.

As we have learned, there have already been talks on this.

An event arena on the airport site does not find a majority, at least in Munich.

Greens and the CSU reject the plans.

"In Munich there are the event centers Messe and Olympiapark," says CSU City Councilor Alexander Reissl.

Both have established themselves as successful venues over the decades.

The city has invested in the three-digit million range in the past few years, in particular for the renovation of the Olympic Park, or it still has to invest. “Many of the trade fair and Olympic Park events attract visitors to the city, which also bring purchasing power to the city and enliven the city. A venue far outside will not exert this attraction for the city. ”Greens City Councilor Sebastian Weisenburger said on request that the Greens basically shared this opinion. "We had a lot of discussions and are of the opinion that there is no need for the arena at the airport."

The investor claims that a hall in Freising would not compete with Munich.

But in the state capital you see things differently, says Weisenburger.

In the Munich SPD, too, “the enthusiasm is limited,” as parliamentary group leader Christian Müller says.

"We would support something that is indirectly co-financed by us, but does not benefit the Munich tax bag." Events should take place "more in Munich than in Freising".

Investor from Freising plans Event Arena at Munich Airport

The investor SWMunich Real Estate from Freising, backed by a potent asset management company from Grünwald, intends to stick to its plans for the Event Arena (project name MUCcc). "We will develop a modern concert arena for the Munich metropolitan region," said a spokesman. The property at the airport is currently preferred. One problem is that the airport's supervisory board would have to approve the property deal - and here the city of Munich in the person of Mayor Dieter Reiter and economic advisor Baumgärtner has a seat and vote. If Munich refuses, as requested by the CSU, the whole project shakes.

For some time now, the company has been looking for a way to move forward with the project. The latest state of affairs: The city of Freising is to draw up a project-related development plan for the hall. Since the possible location is defined as an airport priority area, a procedure for deviating from the target would also have to be initiated. As difficulties grow, the investor may look for other properties. At the request of our newspaper it says: In principle, “various potential locations are possible” for the arena.
