Authorities in the United States have launched an investigation after Border Guard agents on horseback were documented pushing migrants like cattle herds. The photos of the agents chasing the immigrants on the Rio Grande River in Texas have been widely shared on social media and caused a stir. Some have said that they are a reminder of the violence that characterized the period of slavery.
Homeland Security Minister Alejandro Mallorca said his office would investigate the reports. He said agents were trying to take control of the migrants who crossed the river separating Mexico from the United States, which had recently witnessed an influx of migrants, most of them from Haiti.
Border Police commander Raoul Ortiz said the interrogation was being investigated to prevent an "unacceptable" response from police officers. He added that they operate in a harsh environment as they try to distinguish between immigrants and smugglers.
Some 13,000 people have crowded in recent days under the bridge between the border town of Del Rio and Ciudad Aconia in Mexico, and the administration has begun flying some of them back to their country suffering from a severe political, economic and security crisis.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said it was following the deportation of migrants back to Haiti and noted that people fleeing persecution should be eligible for asylum.

White House spokeswoman Jen Saki said the pictures from the border were difficult to view. "I saw some of the documentation. I do not have the full context. I can not imagine in what context it makes sense. But I have no further details and I have no doubt that no one will see these images and think it is acceptable or proper."
The crisis on the southern border of the United States rests on the administration of Democratic President Joe Biden since the beginning of his term in January, when he has come under criticism from all sides. Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said reports from the border about police use of the whip were "extremely disturbing" and she called for an investigation.
Republicans, for their part, blamed the Biden administration and defended the Border Guard. The Democrat "creates humanitarian disasters" and that the situation at the border "will get worse because in Biden's White House, it's just politics all the time."

Many Republicans have called on the administration to implement the rigid immigration policy adopted by its predecessor in office, Donald Trump.
Biden repealed parts of that policy in his early days in office, but the courts intervened in some of the cases and restored the status quo.
The administration has reported an increase in the number of migrants crossing the border with Mexico since the beginning of the year.
According to official figures, the number of immigrants arrested at the border in July exceeded 200,000, for the first time in 21 years.
