During the Long Night of Democracy, the Munich Ferris wheel becomes the “Democracy Wheel”.

State Parliament President Ilse Aigner wants to sharpen the idea of democracy - and calls for discussion.

Munich - There are ups and downs, but the scaffolding stands and shows the direction - so nobody has to be afraid when riding the Ferris wheel. And it is the same with democracy, believes Ilse Aigner (CSU). "The discourse is part of it and there is also some arguing - both in parliament, the heart of democracy, and on a smaller scale in the municipalities," says the state parliament president as she looks over the city from a gondola on the Munich Ferris wheel in the Werksviertel. "This is the only way to keep the bike moving."

As the patron of the Long Night of Democracy, a project of the Bavarian Value Alliance, Aigner invites Bavaria's citizens to reflect - and discuss - about democracy on October 2nd. Assistance is provided not only by the city of Munich, but also by 32 municipalities throughout the Free State, including Freising and Rosenheim. Whether art exhibition, panel discussion, literary reading, scientific lecture, poetry slam or historical city tour - all organizers have put together a colorful evening program.

The Munich Ferris wheel, for example, becomes a “Democracy Wheel” on October 2nd, the night of the Day of German Unity. From 4 p.m. it's free travel. From 7.30 p.m., workshops and discussion groups will take place in the 27 gondolas. Chance decides where you get on and what you then deal with thematically on the half-hour journey. Political education with an event character, as Aigner admits.

“We want the participants to think about democracy and enter into dialogue with one another.

This should raise awareness of the privilege it is to live in a democracy like ours. ”Democracy lives from contradicting, according to Aigner.

“But threats or calls for violence go too far.

Posters that propagate murder cannot be misunderstood. ”Society must oppose this unanimously.

As was the case with reunification, the will for freedom and democracy must prevail.
