The Democratic Party held a general meeting this Sunday (26th) to vote on whether to send members to participate in the December Legislative Council election.
The veteran of the Democratic Party, Li Huaming, has repeatedly called for party members to stand for election recently, threatening that if the party decides to abandon the election without disbanding, he will withdraw from the party.
In an interview today (23), the Democratic Party Central Committee member and member of the Sha Tin District, Zhuolan Xian, who is an "abandoned party," argued that under the new electoral system, candidates must be "screened" in advance. In the past, direct elections in districts did not have such restrictions.
He said frankly that even if Li Huaming quit the party, he would not feel a pity, because the history of the Democratic Party has always been "a long time must be divided."
Xian Zhuolan: The concept that political parties must stand for election is outdated
Li Huaming has stated many times in recent days that as a political party, it should send its members to stand for election, otherwise it should be disbanded.
Xian Zhulan questioned the status of such a political party as an outdated concept. After recent social events, the development of "behind the umbrella" organizations, political veterans, and other political groups has become indistinguishable from political parties; as a group, its core concept is the most important. Even if the Democratic Party has operated in the traditional party mode for more than 20 years, it does not mean that it must be elected in the traditional mode.
As an "abandoning election," Xian Zhuolan disagreed with Li Huaming's claim that the political party had nothing to do other than stand for election.
He pointed out that although many party members resigned as district councillors, they still did not give up and participated in the party plan. "The outgoing councillors are still willing to try and stay in the district to serve, and we are not without councillors, although they are not as good as the legislative council members to send letters to follow up" Fast, beautiful, and upright", but as a district councillor, I still feel that I have something to do."
He also pointed out that no matter whether he is a district councilor or a community officer who has resigned, he did not feel that the officials' attitude towards them was particularly bad. Unlike Li Huaming's point, any request would be "understood."
No seats need to think about the source of funding
Of course, not running for the Legislative Council is not "business as usual."
The Democratic Party has been unable to hold fund-raising evenings for two consecutive years due to the epidemic, and the loss of the resources of legislators will naturally affect the operation of the party.
Xian Zhuolan said that although the previous fundraising results on the streets have been good, the proceeds have been spent seven or eighty-eight. It is also unknown whether the relevant fund-raising licenses will encounter difficulties in the future. Given the lack of resources, it is necessary to find ways to increase revenue.
Refers to the fact that it is normal for someone to leave the Democratic Party
Zhuolan Xian joined the Democratic Party in 2015, and has almost no intersection with Li Huaming, who has retired from the Legislative Council in 2012.
Xian Zhuolan said that even if Li Huaming withdrew because of the party's decision, he would not feel a pity. Looking around the history of the Democratic Party, it has always been "a long time must be divided." The district political alliance and other organizations think this is normal.
Regarding some people's opinion that whether to run or not is a "generational confrontation", Xian Zhuolan disagrees, stressing that the former chairman Emily Lau is also a veteran, and once said that the review and supervision of candidates and members of the election is "unseen before", describing participation as "humiliation." .
He emphasized that there have always been different opinions within the Democratic Party, so the existing democratic mechanism within the party should be followed. When there is a result of the Sunday vote, all party members should respect and obey.
Lu Wenduan: If the Democratic Party’s election is against the Basic Law, Li Huaming: Candidacy after 4 years is an ostrich Democratic election road. Li Huaming: Candidates must be given the green light by the central government. If you actively abandon the election, you will definitely withdraw from the party. People still have resources to run for election, don't hope to fight for political reform
