The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, has demanded this Wednesday before the United Nations General Assembly "the lifting of criminal sanctions" against his country.

"We ratify our request, our demand that all criminal sanctions be lifted against the Venezuelan economy, against Venezuelan society by the United States and by the governments of the European Union," Maduro claimed from a screen on the his recorded speech was projected.

  • The UN qualifies the Venezuelan judicial system as a piece of repression of the Maduro government

  • Bachelet calls for the lifting of sanctions against Venezuela because "they deepen the crisis"

Because Nicolás Maduro did not go in person to the UN headquarters in New York. He did not attend due to the fear that if he steps on US soil he will be arrested, since he has been charged, since March 2020, with criminal charges for terrorism and drug trafficking. In addition, a reward of 15 million dollars is offered for his capture. Since March 2020, the president had not made any international trip until last Saturday, September 18, when the Bolivarian unexpectedly traveled to Mexico to attend the Latin American Summit of CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States).

With the threat of hunting and capture hanging over his head, Maduro repeated a speech delivered many other times, in which to justify this "demand" he assured that it was done from "the reason and morality that assists 30 million Venezuelans and Venezuelan ”. The president has repeatedly asked the Joe Biden Administration to unblock Venezuela's money held in the international banking system due to the sanctions.

From the privileged place granted to him by the UN arena, Maduro took the opportunity to recall that his country has led "on multiple occasions" to different organizations of that system that forms the United Nations and the General Assembly "the denunciation of the fierce onslaught, of the fierce campaign ”, which he considers to exist against his country. For Hugo Chávez's successor, this campaign has “the complicity of the elites” at the head of European organizations. "They have wanted to instrumentalize the international organizations of international law to justify the fierce campaign and criminal attacks against the people of Venezuela," he stressed.

Maduro has denounced with his previously recorded speech that “financial accounts are being persecuted, we have been kidnapped and blocked the gold from the legal international reserves of the Central Bank of Venezuela in London, we have been kidnapped and blocked billions of dollars in bank accounts in the US, in Europe and beyond ”.

All of the aforementioned happens because, according to the president, there is "a permanent and systematic aggression" through sanctions of all kinds, which he has called "cruel".

When the time comes, the Venezuelan has asked for "all the support of the United Nations" so that the process of dialogue initiated with the opposition last August in Mexico advances. On August 13, Mexico became the venue for the third-to-last attempt at dialogue between the Venezuelan government and representatives of the majority opposition. That negotiating table was set up under the auspices of Norway, although Washington is closely monitoring its development. Venezuela broke relations with the United States in 2019, arguing that that country is promoting plans to destabilize the government and force its overthrow. Washington froze all the assets of the Venezuelan government in the United States and prohibited the Americans and their international partners from doing business with Caracas to pressure Maduro to leave power.Washington assures that the Venezuelan leader was elected in 2018 in a fraudulent election.

The third round of that dialogue process will take place from the 24th to the 27th of this month.

“I am grateful for the support of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to the Mexican dialogue process and I request all the support of the United Nations so that the dialogue process in Mexico advances towards new partial agreements and towards a global agreement to strengthen the peace, sovereignty and the integral prosperity of Venezuela ”, said Maduro.
