Opinion | Germany - Israel Relations: Many Reasons to Worry Israel today

2021-09-23T11:02:18.119Z

Israel has for years neglected relations with the German public, on the assumption of a lazy and flightless work that treated Germany as an obvious ally, because of history

Germany, which has served as an anchor of stability in the European Union, is sinking into political chaos.

The reason for this: as in many other Western countries, including Israel, elections do not produce a majority that allows a particular political camp - right or left - to rule.

In Germany, a right-wing majority is not possible as long as at least one in ten Germans votes for the populist right-wing party "Alternative to Germany" - which is boycotted by other right-wing parties due to its extremist characteristics.

A clear and solid left-wing majority is also not guaranteed, in part due to ideological differences between the camp's components, such as NATO membership and German military involvement in international forces around the world.

The absence of a majority on this or that political side necessitates the formation of compromise coalitions, which deal mainly with crisis management instead of outlining a clear policy that will move Germany forward.

Germany is stuck projecting on the entire EU, which is already suffering from serious chronic diseases.

Angela Merkel's 16 years of crisis management have clearly shown how much Germany and Europe need a vision for the future.

But it is not in sight.

Allegedly, internal weaknesses between Germany and Europe are good news for Israel: instead of constantly stirring up Israel's internal affairs, and trying to impose political arrangements on it that pose an existential threat such as a two-state solution, Germans and Europeans will continue to be preoccupied with their problems. Will require them to once again push their hands in destroying the future of the Jewish state.

At the same time, Israel should also be very concerned about the ongoing negative drift in its relations with Germany.

The three candidates for chancellor - the conservative Armin Lasht, the Social Democrat Olaf Schultz and the "green" Annalna Barbuk - can certainly be considered friends of Israel, but this position does not reflect the position of the majority in their parties and among the German public.

Israel has for years neglected relations with the German public, on the assumption of a lazy and flightless job that treated Germany as an obvious ally, because of history.

Moreover, over the years, Israel-Germany relations have been entrusted as a monopoly by Israeli left-wing elements, some of whom are utterly anti-Zionists.

If, after the next election, the scenario of the formation of a "full-fledged" left-wing government is realized together with the extreme left, German anti-Israel activity will receive a significant boost - even if such a German government is very busy with economics, society and the interior.

The Social Democratic Party, which recycles Muslim and Arab voters, promotes "German-Palestinians" to senior positions and in the past members of it were active in freezing arms deals between Germany and Israel. Currents in the far-left party Di Linke are involved in promoting boycott initiatives on Israel. And even among the "Greens" there were those who turned up their noses at the Bundestag's decision to define the BDS movement as anti-Semitic and to ban public assistance for its actions.

The German left - in academia, media, art and politics, in collaboration with the Israeli left - is fighting the definition of international anti-Semitism because of its treatment of anti-Zionism as anti-Semitism.

Although the Merkel administration has promoted quite a few initiatives to strengthen ties between Germany and Israel, it has not acted with the determination necessary to prevent Germany from becoming one of the main centers of anti-Israel activity in Europe.

Thus, the negative drift was stopped and the infrastructure for accelerating it was created in the coming years.

When the President of Germany visits Israel when his entourage Israelis support the boycott of Israel and deny its Jewish character, and no one criticizes it - the Germans can dissolve as quickly as they see the uniqueness of the relationship with Israel and what remains of the historical commitment to it.
