The volcano that erupted on the Canary Island of La Palma continued to emit lava into the air today (Thursday), while a toxic ash cloud covered the area's sky five days before the eruption began.

The lava melted hundreds of homes, schools and banana groves, the main export source of the Spanish island, although the pace slowed compared to previous days.

"What started on Sunday as something extraordinary, something beautiful to see, turned into a tragedy the next day," said Nancy, a local jewelry store owner.

"I have a lot of friends here, families who have lost everything. Our heart is broken."

Thousands of people fled their homes from the boiling lava, which burned everything in its path.

Local authorities warned residents to clean their vegetables and clothes so as not to swallow toxic ash.

A cloud of sulfur dioxide is expected to move east in the coming hours and pass through the skies of the Canary Islands, the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean.

It is estimated that the eruption of the volcano has so far destroyed property worth about 87 billion euros.

The Association of Banks of Spain has offered to provide residents who have lost their homes with available assets held by the banks.
