The city rejects warning sirens in Munich.
As can be seen from a response to a request from the CSU, a total of 900 sirens would have to be set up in order to provide effective warnings in an emergency.
The excitement was great when not a single siren could be heard in Munich on the nationwide warning day on September 10, 2020. The reason: They were gradually dismantled after the end of the Cold War. They are no longer being built either, the city is now announcing this at a request from the CSU. "To cover the entire city area of 310 square kilometers, around 900 current sirens would be required."
These would each have a radial effective area of around 350 meters and would have to be installed in a uniform manner in the urban area.
"A possible equipping of municipal service buildings would therefore not be sufficient for complete coverage, which would, however, be a basic prerequisite for comprehensive visibility in the population." Therefore, locations would have to be determined and usage contracts concluded with the building owners.
A year ago, the CSU applied for the sirens to be rebuilt.
City councilor Fabian Ewald said at the time: "How should citizens protect themselves from acute dangers if they are not aware of it?"
The disaster warning day was a catastrophic failure, said group vice-president Evelyne Menges.
In acute danger, it is important to reach as many people as possible quickly and reliably.
A timely warning could save lives.
Apps like Katwarn are an important part of the warning system, but they shouldn't be the only way of communication.
