Today, President Yitzhak Herzog paid tribute to German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a column in the German newspaper Die Zeit, the most widely read weekly in Germany, on the occasion of the end of her term, along with other world leaders, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US Secretary of State Anthony Blink .
President Herzog mentioned in his remarks the first time he met Angela Merkel, when she was greeted at Ben Gurion Airport in 2007 as Minister of Welfare:
Its success story, from the tyrannical reality of East Germany to the pinnacle of liberal world order, is a clear symbol of the gospel that the 21st century brings.
Its commitment to a values-based policy will be its eternal legacy. '
The President thanked the Chancellor for her personal commitment to the commemoration of the Holocaust and to Israel's security.
President Herzog added that he would like to learn from Merkel and that he hopes to host her in Jerusalem soon.
