Miqdad and Lavrov from New York: Ending the illegal foreign presence on Syrian soil

Dr. Faisal Miqdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in New York, discussed with Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, various aspects related to strengthening the distinguished bilateral relations between the two friendly countries at all political and economic levels, which witnessed a new momentum through the recent summit held between Presidents Bashar al-Assad and Vladimir Putin in Moscow .

The two ministers stressed the need to move forward in developing and expanding these relations at various levels, and they held a discussion on the situation in Syria, during which they stressed the need to continue fighting terrorism until its complete elimination, ending the illegal foreign presence on Syrian territory, and lifting unilateral coercive measures on Syria.

In this context, Minister Lavrov affirmed his country's principled position based on full respect for Syria's sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and non-interference in its internal affairs.

In turn, Minister Miqdad expressed Syria's thanks and appreciation for the Russian support in various political, economic and humanitarian fields.

The two ministers also discussed the developments in the region and welcomed the convening of the first meeting of the Group of Friends in Defense of the United Nations Charter, which was held this morning in New York.

On the Syrian side, the meeting was attended by Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Bassam Sabbagh, the Permanent Representative of Syria to the United Nations, Dr. Abdullah Hallaq, Director of the Special Office Department, Qusay Al-Dahhak, Deputy Permanent Representative in New York, and Ihab Hamed from the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.
