In June 2019, an unprecedented summit was held in Jerusalem with the participation of the National Security Advisers of Russia, the United States and Israel to discuss the situation in Syria.

Two months after the incident, U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton was fired and as a result there were no similar follow-up meetings.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov raised the issue during his meeting with Foreign Minister Yair Lapid when he visited Moscow two weeks ago.

Lavrov asked that Israel encourage the Biden administration to hold such a tripartite meeting, and senior Russian officials also raised the issue with National Security Adviser Eyal Hulta.

Last week, a meeting was held in Geneva between President Biden's senior adviser on Middle East affairs Brett McGrack and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin and Putin's envoy to Syria Alexander Lebrentiev.

The Russians initiated the meeting to discuss with the Americans the situation in Syria and the reaching of a secondary settlement that would end the civil war there.

According to al-Sharq al-Awsat, McGrack raised the issue of the need to remove pro-Iranian militias from the border with Israel in the Golan Heights.

Israeli officials have said they support a tripartite meeting with Russia and the United States over Syria.

The White House declined to comment.
