Moscow-Sana
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin announced today that the issue of representing the Afghan Taliban movement in the United Nations is a very complex issue, noting that humanitarian aid to Afghanistan is a priority at the present time.
Sputnik news agency quoted Vershinin as saying to reporters in response to a question about the movement's representation in the United Nations: "It is a very complex issue... I mean that the United Nations has rules that determine who represents the country officially in the United Nations and it is an issue that should be resolved."
Vershinin added: "The main issue being discussed at the moment is the issue of coordinating the actions of the international community regarding the situation in Afghanistan, in particular the humanitarian dimension... There is a need for urgent humanitarian assistance."
Vershinin noted that Moscow does not believe that deadlines should be set for the formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan and said, "Such a government should reflect the political and ethnic forces present in Afghanistan and thus make the overall situation more stable."
Earlier, the United Nations Secretariat received a letter from the Foreign Minister of the government formed by the Taliban in Afghanistan, Amirkhan Mottaki, regarding the appointment of the spokesman for its political office in Doha, Suhail Shaheen, as its delegate to the United Nations.
