U.S. envoy to Haiti resigns over deportation of immigrants: "Inhuman"

Daniel Pot was only appointed in July, following the assassination of the president, but was long frustrated by the Biden administration's policies.

The pictures of policemen riding horses from immigrant plots and the chaos on the island upon their return were the straw that broke the camel's back.

The special envoy of the Biden administration to Haiti resigned today (Thursday) in protest of the "inhumane" deportation of Haitian immigrants back to their country suffering from many crises and natural disasters, US officials said.

Daniel Pot was appointed to the post only in July, following the assassination of Haitian President Jubilee Moyes. Even before the deportation of immigrants from the small border town of Del Rio, Texas, it was known that the veteran diplomat was very frustrated by the lack of urgency in the administration to improve the situation in Haiti.

Pot wrote to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that he was retiring immediately "with deep disappointment and an apology to those seeking significant changes."

"I will not be identified with the United States' inhumane and unhelpful decision to deport thousands of illegal refugees and immigrants to Haiti, a country where U.S. officials are confined to fortified enclosures due to the danger to daily life from armed gangs," he wrote.

"Our policy towards Haiti has remained very flawed, and my policy recommendations have been ignored and rejected when not rewritten to present a different narrative of my own."
