The Elbach elementary school has got a library.

Over 800 books are already waiting for the children;

it should be up to 2000 copies.

Elbach - A library was created in the Elbach elementary school.

In an interview, headmaster Michael Hutzl explains which books his students prefer to read and how two sponsors made the library possible in the first place.

Mr. Hutzl, the Elbach elementary school has set up a library.

Do your students still read in the age of digitization?

Hutzl:

Yes.

Our fourth graders were allowed to borrow books last year because they will no longer be at school in the new school year and will no longer benefit from the library.

They also made good use of that.

There were also classes in small groups in the library.

There is great interest in all grades.

In the new school year our electronic lending system starts and we officially open the library.

Then all students can regularly borrow books and read them at home.

Before that, your elementary school did not have a library.

Why the start now?

Hutzl:

The idea for a library came from two young, very well-read teachers, Ms. Huber and Ms. Lippkau.

They wanted to give children access to books and create a counterbalance to digitization.

That was well received by my colleagues.

So we tried to achieve this goal.

A fortunate circumstance helped.

Hutzl:

Yes.

Through Mr. von Hoessle from the book oasis in Schliersee, contact was established with a nice couple from Neuhaus.

The woman was a bookseller herself and has a sound basic knowledge.

She helped us a lot with the planning and selection of books.

What do you need for a library, how do you build it?

She also paid attention to a balanced selection of books, so that we offer good non-fiction and children's and youth literature.

A lively professional exchange and thus a great collaboration has developed between the couple and their colleagues.

The library was a community project.

Hutzl:

Yes.

The parents' council and the teachers have set up the room, cleared out the furniture, tore out the walls.

The community bears the costs for the floor, soundproofing ceiling and plastering work and the employees of the building yard have disposed of the "contaminated sites".

The nice couple thankfully donated the furniture and books.

After the Whitsun vacation the room was ready, and we've been buying books bit by bit ever since.

Which books do your students read the most?

Hutzl:

We asked our students in writing which books they would like to have in the library.

The most popular were comics.

Older ones like Momo, Lucky Luke and Asterix and Obelix, but also modern ones like Greg's diary.

There are also children's fantasy books such as the Magical Tree House and Harry Potter.

There is also interest in novels.

And of course non-fiction books like “What-is-what?”.

Non-fiction books about animals, for example, are very popular or on technical subjects.

What is special about your library?

Hutzl:

The special thing is that we were able to install a very nice library at our school in a relatively short time thanks to a really very goal-oriented collaborative

effort

.

Many people have selflessly invested time, knowledge and money.

The atmosphere in the library is so pleasant that the room is also often used for meetings or discussions with parents.

The interview was conducted by Christian Masengarb.
