Beijing-Sana

China stressed that the United States has a long history of human trafficking and slavery, calling on it to take immediate measures to combat this dangerous phenomenon.

Xinhua quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian as saying in a statement yesterday in response to a question about the recent dialogue that took place during the 48th session of the Human Rights Council with the Special Rapporteur on forms of slavery: “The United States has a history of slavery and the abhorrent slave trade as well. Genocide crimes were committed against American Indians.” He added, “To this day, the United States continues to suffer from an epidemic of human trafficking and forced labor.”

Over the past five years, Zhao said, "about 100,000 people were smuggled annually into the United States from abroad for the purpose of forced labor, with about half of them ending up in very heavy labor for low wages or domestic servitude."

The Chinese spokesman added that about 500,000 children, most of them under 10 years old, are forced to work 72 hours a week in the agricultural sector in the United States, and the number of victims of sexual slavery among women and children ranges between 240,000 and 325,000 in this country, and the average life expectancy of children after Their sex trafficking use is 7 years.

"The willful indifference and inaction of the US government are the two factors responsible for the aggravation of human trafficking and forced labor cases," Zhao noted, noting that the United States is the only country in the world that has not ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

And he added, “Washington must take immediate measures to ratify relevant human rights treaties, eliminate human trafficking and forced labor crimes, rescue innocent women and children, and bring to justice those responsible for these crimes.” The Human Rights Council and relevant mechanisms should continue to pay attention to these issues and take the necessary measures.
