The Hong Kong Committee on Smoking and Health used to organize the "School Interactive Education Touring Theatre" every year, aiming to educate and promote the prevention of smoking among children and adolescents in the form of a theater.

In the new school year, the committee will launch a new play "Smoke-Free Rescue Team", which focuses on educating children to recognize the harmful effects of alternative smoking products, such as heating cigarettes and e-cigarettes, encouraging students to refuse any smoking products, and encouraging family members who smoke to quit smoking.

The premiere ceremony was held today (24th) at the Anglican St. James' Primary School. About 280 teachers, students and guests took the lead to watch it.

Officiating guests include Professor Chen Zhaoshi, Secretary for Food and Health, Dr. Feng Ying, Director of the Office of Tobacco and Alcohol Control of the Department of Health, and Tang Xiuqi, Chairman of the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health.

The "Smoke-Free Rescue Team" theater will begin at the end of September and will conduct nearly 85 performances in primary schools in all districts of Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Committee on Smoking and Health has been using school interactive education touring theaters for many years as one of the key education and publicity activities for children and young people to prevent smoking.

The committee hopes to educate students through theater to refuse to try alternative cigarettes

Committee Chairman Tang Xiuqi pointed out that the Committee has noticed that the promotion of alternative smoking products such as heating cigarettes and e-cigarettes targeting young people in recent years is worried that smoking will be rekindled and will attract people who have never smoked, especially children and young people. The repertoire strengthens the promotion of the harmful effects of alternative smoking, "to let students learn how to refuse the first puff, encourage relatives and friends to quit smoking, share the smoke-free information with people around them, and contribute to the promotion of smoke-free Hong Kong."

The committee pointed out that this year's school interactive educational tour theater was co-organized by the Education Bureau and cooperated with the "iStage" theater company. The smoke-free spokesperson "Mike" (Ah Mike) joined the performance for the first time.

In the "Smoke-Free Rescue Team" theater, three elementary school students living in the "Health Building" have different illnesses. Mike, the convener of the "Smoke-Free Rescue Team", points out that the building has different types of smoke hazards and invites the other protagonists to join in. The "Smoke-Free Rescue Team" relies on smoke-free knowledge and equipment to find and repel the smoke hazard crisis.

The theater is equipped with music, stage effects and lively and interesting interpretation techniques, allowing students to understand the harms of smoking, second-hand smoke and third-hand smoke during the appreciation process. The audience can also participate in the play through multiple interactive links in the play, and Mike and The protagonist in the play exposes the propaganda tactics of tobacco companies and eliminates the tobacco crisis.

Zhang Yongbang, principal of St. James’ Primary School of Anglican Church, said that the content of the theater is attractive, the performance is lively and interesting, and the interactive sessions also help students participate in it, enhance their knowledge of smoke-free, and help students think about how to reject the temptation of alternative cigarettes.
