The Swedish initiator of Fridays for Future, Greta Thunberg, described Germany shortly before the federal election as "one of the greatest objectively climate villains".

"Germany is the fourth largest carbon dioxide emitter in history, and that with a population of 80 million people," Thunberg said on Friday at a large demonstration in front of the Bundestag.

In her speech, which was accompanied by applause and approval, she called for a change in the "system".

You cannot "invest, build or buy" yourself out of the crisis, according to Thunberg.

"And the longer they pretend we can solve the crisis within today's system, the more time we lose."

Demonstrations in more than 400 locations in Germany

Thousands of demonstrators gathered on the meadow in front of the Reichstag on Friday, and the German climate activist Luisa Neubauer also spoke.

Thunberg left the area in front of the Reichstag building together with Neubauer under police protection, as a dpa reporter reported.

Three men had previously harassed and insulted the climate activist.

A total of 1500 events were planned worldwide for Friday, in Germany according to the organizers in more than 470 locations.

In Berlin alone, the organizers spoke of 100,000 participants.

An estimate of the number of participants in the Berlin police has not yet been made.

All three candidates for chancellor reacted to the demonstration on Friday.

Green candidate

Annalena Baerbock appeared

briefly in the morning at one of the demonstrators' meeting points.

She later tweeted: “The election on Sunday is a climate election.

I want the next federal government to be a climate government and that is only possible with strong Greens. "

SPD Chancellor candidate

Olaf Scholz

wrote on Twitter: “It is correct that there is a climate strike today.

Climate policy is one of the important issues that will be decided in this election! «.

"Fridays for Future Germany" replied: "We don't want to destroy the good mood - but we're going on strike today with YOUR government, Olaf."

Union candidate

Armin Laschet

said: "Germany must become faster and better in terms of climate protection." The CDU is clear about that.

The goal is to achieve climate neutrality worldwide as quickly as possible.

However, this is a task that can only be solved globally.

In addition, jobs would have to be preserved.

Activist Neubauer addressed Scholz and Laschet directly in her speech.

"For one summer, Olaf Scholz had to hear that his crazy plan to let coal run until 2038 is doomed to failure," said Neubauer.

"We forced the parties to spend a summer talking about climate policy, even though their programs weren't enough, and they know that themselves. No wonder you have to lie, Mr. Laschet."
