The data of the problem
Knowing that today in France, 43% of the national rail network is not electrified, that 85% of the small so-called fine service lines in the territory are not, ie 12,047 km;
noting that the cost of electrification of a track is very high, 1 million euros per kilometer;
noting that the SNCF's objective is to free itself from diesel by 2035 in a process of decarbonations ... What is the solution to replace the thousand diesel trainsets to be renewed within ten years and continue to operate the secondary network?
A solution: hydrogen
Indeed, the hydrogen train does not need catenaries and does not use fuel oil.
It produces its own electricity using a fuel cell, by a chemical reaction between the hydrogen stored in its tanks and the oxygen in the air.
Emitting only water, it moves forward without emission of pollutants into the atmosphere and even without noise.
CQFD?
Not quite ... But almost.
