Miqdad to Pedersen: The United Nations must assume its responsibilities to ensure respect for Syria's sovereignty

Dr. Faisal Miqdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, met today with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Syria Geir Pedersen, who reviewed the efforts he is making in the context of facilitating the holding of the sixth round of the constitutional discussion committee, referring to the recent meetings and contacts he made in this regard.

For his part, Minister Miqdad stressed the need for the Constitutional Discussion Committee to work under the ownership and leadership of Syria, stressing the importance of allowing the committee members to discuss on their own without external interference by anyone and without artificial timetables on issues related to the committee’s work.

Minister Miqdad also referred to the need for the United Nations and the Special Envoy to assume their responsibilities with regard to ensuring respect for Syria's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, as this principle is guaranteed under the Charter of the United Nations and international law, especially in view of the violations of the US and Turkish occupations in Syrian territory and their support for terrorism.

Minister Miqdad also met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Nikola Silakovic, where the two ministers discussed ways to develop relations between the two friendly countries at various political, economic and cultural levels and exchange experiences.

The Serbian Minister welcomed the participation of Minister Miqdad in the meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement to commemorate the movement’s 60th anniversary, which will be held in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, on October 11 and 12, 2021.

Minister Miqdad, during his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jehun Bayramov, discussed the issues on the agenda of the meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the movement, under Azerbaijan's presidency of the movement, where it was emphasized the need to activate the movement's work on issues that constitute a priority for its members and reviewed developments in the situation On the international scene, they exchanged views on this matter.

On the other hand, Minister Miqdad Abdullah Shahid congratulated the President of the United Nations General Assembly during the meeting that took place with him today, stressing Syria's readiness to provide all cooperation to implement the priorities he identified in his opening statement to the General Assembly.

Minister Miqdad also stressed the need for all countries to respect the Charter of the United Nations and international law and not to interfere in the internal affairs of countries, pointing to the need to mobilize international support to stand in the face of violations committed by some of the Charter, including through unilateral coercive measures that must be put to an end given its disastrous effects on the target populations.

In turn, the President of the General Assembly affirmed his commitment to the mandate entrusted to him in accordance with the provisions of the Charter.

In his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, Minister Mikdad discussed strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries, especially in light of brotherly ties. in Syrian universities.

For his part, Minister Miqdad expressed his satisfaction with the level of relations between the two brotherly countries and the importance of the two countries' solidarity against all forms of siege and economic terrorism. He gave an explanation of the challenges facing Syria as a result of the Turkish occupation of the northwest and the American occupation of northeastern Syria.

On the Syrian side, the meetings were attended by Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Bassam Sabbagh, Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations, Dr. Abdullah Hallaq, Director of the Special Office Department, and Ihab Hamed from the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.
