United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the international community to redouble its efforts in the field of renewable energy to avoid a climate emergency and tackle global energy poverty.
"We are at the moment of truth and it is necessary to provide (affordable, renewable and sustainable energy for all), calling for an end to energy poverty and climate change at the same time," Guterres was quoted by AFP as saying today.
Guterres stressed that the world must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 54 percent in 2030 compared to 2010 levels to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, considering that the world is still far from being able to provide affordable and clean energy for all.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations called to quadruple the potential of solar and wind energy by 2030 as part of a move to triple investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency to reach five trillion dollars per year, stressing the need for the relevant authorities to gradually stop subsidizing fossil fuel production and “identify A price for carbon.
Guterres' comments came after governments and private sector entities pledged earlier today to spend more than $400 billion on projects related to renewable energy during a summit that called for redoubling efforts to avoid disasters caused by climate change.
