How was that with the Kreuzerl?

Surveys show that there are some pitfalls in a voting slip.

Almost half of the 18-29 year olds seem overwhelmed.

The most important things at a glance.

Munich - A survey among 18 to 29 year olds revealed large gaps in the Bundestag election *: 38 percent of those surveyed by the YouGov Institute could not answer the question "How many votes do you have in the Bundestag election?"

The majority of young voters also do not know the name or party of the MP for their own constituency *, according to the survey commissioned by the editorial network Germany.

But it is not only the young voters who are often overwhelmed by the complexity of the election.

explains (in good time also for postal voters) how the federal election works.

According to the poll for the federal election: How many Kreuzerl are there in the federal election?

Two.

With the first vote, you choose the direct candidate, i.e. the member of parliament in your constituency.

Only the candidate who receives the most votes in the constituency moves into the Bundestag - there are 299 constituencies in Germany that are cut in such a way that each has about the same number of voters.

With the second vote, which is often referred to as the “more important” vote, you choose the party.

Each party draws up a list of countries, the order of which is determined in internal party elections.

In addition to the MPs directly elected via the first vote, the other MPs move into the Bundestag via these state lists of the respective parties.

Do all elected parties come to the Bundestag?

No, only the parties that get more than five percent of the second votes nationwide will move into parliament. The five percent hurdle was introduced in response to the fragmented parliament of the Weimar Republic. This fragmentation was partly responsible for Hitler's seizure of power.

Parties that achieve three or more direct mandates are taken into account in the distribution of seats according to their share of the vote - which probably guarantees seats for the CSU, even if the party that only competes in Bavaria does not exceed five percent in terms of the entire Federal Republic of Germany.

Depending on the election result, the CSU would fail if the result was below 30 percent in Bavaria at the five percent hurdle in the federal government.

If a party gets more direct mandates than it is entitled to according to the second vote result, there are overhang mandates.

So that the other parties are not disadvantaged, there are compensation mandates.

That is why there are currently 709 MPs, although the Bundestag's standard size is 598 seats.

This time it could be up to 1000!

Who is eligible to vote?

All German citizens who are at least 18 years old on election day, have lived in Germany for at least three months and are not excluded from the right to vote.

Excluded are people who have lost the right to vote as a result of a judge's verdict - for example because of treason or election fraud.

This has never happened before in the history of the Federal Republic.

In 2019, the Constitutional Court declared the exclusion of persons who are in psychiatry by court order unconstitutional.

Even those who have a legal guardian can vote according to this constitutional court ruling.

What should I do if I do not receive a voting notification?

If you have not yet received a voting notification, you should contact the electoral office immediately (election hotline: 089/233 96233).

Homeless people who are usually in the Munich city area can apply to be included in the electoral register until next Friday, according to the district administration department.

If you have lost the voting notification, it is sufficient to bring a valid identity card or passport with you to the voting room.

I'm not in my hometown on election day.

How can I still vote?

Applications for postal voting can still be submitted until Friday, September 24th, 6 p.m. - either with the voting slip or using the online form.

If you have the postal voting documents sent to you, the response takes six to eight days according to the KVR.

Last minute postal voters have to collect the documents personally - from the election office or from the district inspectorate.

With a power of attorney, you can also instruct someone else to collect the postal voting documents.
