Wavi's CFO, Meng Wenzhou, has reached an agreement with the US prosecution to close the fraud case against her, US officials announced tonight (Saturday). Meng will be allowed to leave Canada, where she has been detained since December 2018. According to a source close to China, she is expected to board a flight back to her homeland tonight

Judges in the U.S. and Canada later signed her release, leading to an excited response from Meng, the daughter of Wawi founder, who hugged members of her defense team and thanked the judge for her fairness.

The accusations against the senior Chinese technology giant have formed the basis of the shaky relations between China and the United States in recent years, and officials in the Far East have recently conveyed messages that an end to the crisis could bring an end to diplomatic stalemate between the two countries. At the same time, the move invites criticism from opponents of President Joe Biden, who claim that the US is surrendering to China and one of its leading companies as part of the technological rivalry between the two powers.

Meng was arrested about three years ago at Vancouver Airport, in accordance with a US order, and accused by US authorities of misleading international banks in order to circumvent sanctions on Iran and Syria. Businesses accused of espionage in Beijing have denied any connection between the cases. The businessman was sentenced last month to 11 years in prison, with his trial held behind closed doors.

According to the allegations, Meng misled the banks by hiding contact with Skycom Tech and Canicola Holdings, which are in fact subsidiaries of Wawi.

Documents obtained by the Reuters news agency show the connection between the media giant and the two press companies.

According to the US authorities, Wawi maintained control of Skycom in Iran and used it to sell communications equipment to Iran while transferring funds through international banks.

As a result of this fraud, according to the United States, hundreds of millions of dollars were transferred from transactions that allegedly violated the sanctions that existed at the time against Iran.

Aside from being blamed for violating sanctions on Iran, the United States has blamed Wawi for stealing trade secrets from the American company T-MOBILE.
