A few hours after the start of their thirst strike, the climate activists in Berlin are eating again.
In the early evening, SPD Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz promised the strikers a public discussion about a climate emergency after the election, tweeted the 21-year-old Henning Jeschke.
The SPD confirmed the information.
»Our hunger strike, as a means of civil disobedience, broke the politicians' blockade.
Our determination and the solidarity of many people have won, ”said Lea Bonasera, one of the thirst strikers.
This shows that civil disobedience works and that politicians have to deal with the younger generation.
In the evening Scholz was relieved: "I'm glad that the strikers break off and drink and eat again," tweeted Scholz.
“Life comes first.
I stand by my offer to talk to after the election, I will stick to it. "
Several young adults went on hunger strike in late August for a radical change in the climate.
First of all, they called for a public conversation with the Chancellor candidates Scholz, Armin Laschet (CDU / CSU) and Annalena Baerbock (Greens).
After the politicians failed to comply with these demands, the majority of the activists ended their hunger strike this week.
On Saturday morning, the two activists who were still on strike went on a thirst strike.
The two had asked Scholz to declare a climate emergency.
Scholz had called for the action to be canceled and offered to talk to them after the election.
This offer was renewed on Saturday.
