14 projects and scientific research, the authors of which competed today in the final of the first university competition for robotics and smart systems, which was set up by the Academic Programs Department at the Excellence and Creativity Authority, at the Reda Saeed Conference Center at Damascus University.

The competition aims to encourage university students to accomplish university engineering and research projects in the fields of robotics, smart systems and industrial applications in order to solve real problems in industry and other fields, evaluate them and propose the possibility of finding an investor for them.

Dr. Muhib Al-Naqari, head of the Scientific Committee for Robotics at the Excellence and Creativity Authority, pointed out in a statement to SANA the importance of the competition, which is being held for the first time, in which undergraduate and graduate students compete in terms of attracting distinguished university engineering projects in the field of robotics, whether in public or private universities for their implementation. On the ground and informing investors of them of what can be optimally utilized in the Syrian market.

According to Al-Naqri, the first launch of the competition witnessed encouraging participation from students from faculties of (Applied Engineering, Informatics, Mechatronics, Communication Control Systems, Mechanical Design Engineering and Production) in various governorates, and it amounted to 40 diverse scientific works distributed between applied university projects and research for postgraduate studies and dealt with themes (robot science, smart systems and industrial applications). Noting that after presenting the submitted projects to the judging and evaluation committee, 14 projects were selected, including 10 applied scientific projects at first university level and 4 scientific researches for postgraduate studies.

Al-Naqari pointed out that the results will be announced, and the top three winners in each category will be crowned and honored in an official ceremony. The first will be awarded a gold medal, the second will receive a silver medal, and the third will receive a bronze medal, in addition to financial prizes.

A number of participating students spoke to SANA about their projects. Abdel Razzaq Salama from the Higher Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology, specializing in mechatronics, said that his project includes a cylindrical robot with multiple shapes and directions that can be used in searches for rubble and destroyed buildings.

From the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Damascus University, Department of Computer Engineering, Raneem Al-Bani indicated that her project and her colleagues are a portable Braille reader that aims to help the blind to read any text content.

Tishreen University graduate, Engineer Ahmed Ahmed, indicated that he designed in partnership with a number of his colleagues (a robotic handling arm) that can be used as an educational tool that serves the scientific and practical aspect in university laboratories, while the arm designed by his colleague Munir Haroun is useful for sorting pieces and tools based on image processing algorithms. It is useful in teaching engineering students and training them on the rules of engineering design.
