CDU or SPD, Armin Laschet or Olaf Scholz?

The federal election in 2021 promises pure excitement.

The last information before election day.

  • The federal election in 2021 * is pending: Germany will elect a new parliament * and get a new federal government.

  • Head-to-head race: The 2021 election is exciting as it has not been for a long time.

With CDU * / CSU *, SPD * and the Greens *, three parties are close to each other in the polls.

  • Armin Laschet *, Olaf Scholz * or Annalena Baerbock *?

Who will lead the new federal government?

    And when is the coalition?

You can find answers to these questions here.

Frankfurt - It has seldom been so exciting.

The polls for the federal election in 2021 indicate a head-to-head race between the former popular parties CDU / CSU and SPD.

The Greens are just behind.

Whoever has the edge in the end and moves into the new Bundestag as the strongest parliamentary group is completely open.

But what is actually chosen?

When will the final winner be determined?

And when does Germany have a new federal government?

You can find answers to these questions here.

Federal election 2021: Germany elects a new parliament

The time has come on Sunday, September 26th. Around 60 million Germans are called to cast their votes for the new Bundestag. With the first vote * direct candidates are elected in 299 constituencies, with the second vote one of the parties that will stand in the federal election in 2021. This results in the composition of the new Bundestag. It consists of at least 598 seats, but probably a lot more.

The parliament in turn then elects the new Federal Chancellor *.

It can be assumed that one of the top candidates will be chosen: Armin Laschet from the CDU, Olaf Scholz from the SPD and Annalena Baerbock from the Greens were nominated by their parties.

From a purely legal point of view, however, parliament is not bound by party nominations.

In theory, anyone who meets the requirements for the office of chancellor could be elected.

Federal election 2021: when is the winner?

It will certainly take a few days, maybe even weeks, until the official final result of the 2021 federal election * is certain.

But that doesn't mean that people in Germany and around the world * have to wait so long to know who will be the winner of the election.

Shortly after the polling stations in Germany close, the first projections are published.

And these are traditionally very precise.

The winner of the federal election should therefore be determined on the evening of the election itself.

Federal election 2021: when will Germany get a new government?

It could be some time before a new government is in place for the Federal Republic of Germany.

Since 1980 it has taken an average of 54 days until a new government is formed and sworn in after the federal election.

In the 2017 election it was an impressive 171 days, in 2013 it was 86 days.

Because this time a coalition of two parties is unlikely and, after the 2021 election, Germany will probably be governed by three parties for the first time since 1953, coalition negotiations could again drag on for a long time.

There is no official rule as to how long the coalition negotiations can last.

Until a new federal government is in place, the old one simply continues to rule.

For Angela Merkel *, the federal election in 2021 is unlikely to end.

Should the formation of the government take until shortly before Christmas, Angela Merkel will even set another record after her long term in office.

Should she remain in office until December 21, 2021, she would be the Federal Chancellor with the longest term in office in the history of the Federal Republic.

Former Chancellor Helmut Kohl has held this record so far.
