A conference in support of normalization with Israel held at Kurdish Autonomy in Iraq drew angry reactions in the Arab world • In a conversation with Israel Today, a local media man explains the difficulties on the road to normalization between Baghdad and Jerusalem

Iraq is in turmoil after the authorities in Kurdish autonomy in the north of the country allowed an unprecedented gathering in Iraq, the purpose of which was to call for normalization with Israel and the establishment of diplomatic relations between Iraq and its Kurdish autonomy, Israel.

The unique conference, which was attended by 300 community leaders in the Arab country, surprised and moved many in the West and in Israel.

Deputy Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Yair Lapid issued a statement saying: "From the day this government took office, our goal is to expand the Abrahamic Accords. The event in Iraq inspires hope for places we have not thought of before. We and Iraq have a common history and roots in the Jewish community. "Where they will reach out to us, we will do everything to reach out again."

The unusual spectacle of dozens of tribal leaders from six different provinces in Iraq, including representatives of the country's Shiite population, sitting and listening to speeches on Abraham's initiative and the possibilities inherent in establishing relations between the two countries, was probably a little too much for the government in Baghdad.

The Lebanese news channel Al-Miyadin, affiliated with the terrorist organization Hezbollah, reported that the Iraqi Presidential Office issued a strong condemnation of the conference in which it reiterated Iraq's commitment to the Palestinian issue and the president's opposition to normalization with Israel.

"The meeting did not represent the positions of the people and the Iraqi government but only those who participated in it. In addition, it is an attempt to stir up the situation in Iraq and interfere with public peace," the Iraqi presidency said in a statement.

Along with the negative but relatively restrained response from the authorities, the media in Kurdish autonomy reported threats sent to conference participants by pro-Iranian militias in the country and some users of the conference who were forced to remain in Kurdish autonomy instead of returning home, fearing for their lives.

"Israel is a good choice for Iraq"

Mehdi Farage, a media man and international relations researcher from the city of Dohuk in Kurdish autonomy in Iraq, says in a conversation with Israel Today that the road to possible relations between Iraq and Israel is long, and the reason for this is mainly due to the country's shaky political and economic situation.

"Unfortunately, Iraq is a country that is suffering from civil war, coups and uprisings. It is suffering from injustice in the political and economic sphere and its government needs comprehensive reform in every aspect."

International Relations Researcher, Mahdi Faraj,

"Iraq needs the support of strong countries to build a better security and infrastructure system. I believe Israel is a good choice for a partner in Iraq and should have diplomatic and official relations with Israel, as other Arab countries do," Faraj said, but warned that the main obstacle to possible relations was Between the two countries is Tehran.

"Iran is a major reason why the regime in Iraq will not even consider relations with Israel. Good relations between Israel and Iraq are not to Tehran's liking and it will use its overt and covert parties and forces to stop such a process, even if it enjoys some support," Farage explains.

Regarding relations between Israel and Kurdish autonomy, Farage says: "There are many similarities between Jews and Kurds in the Middle East, as national minorities. I personally know Israel well and am happy for its existence. As a Kurd, I would like to see the relations between the peoples tighten alongside Israeli assistance in finding a just solution for the Kurdish question. "
