There was no need to mention China by name.

The leaders of the United States, Japan, India and Australia promised yesterday (Friday) to protect the Indo-Pacific region from threats and leave it free and open, at the first summit meeting between them held at the White House.

The four countries, collectively referred to as the "square", are trying to form a unified front due to their common fear of China, which has warned that their initiative is "destined to fail".

"We stand by the rule of law, freedom of navigation and flight, peaceful solutions to disputes, democratic values and the territorial integrity of states," said US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihida Soga and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a joint statement after the talks.

China was not explicitly mentioned, but the leaders stressed their reservations about bullying behavior, as China treats its neighbors in the region.

"Together, we are committed to promoting the free, open and law-based order, which is rooted in international law and does not shy away from threats, in order to promote security and prosperity in India and the Pacific and beyond," the four leaders said.

They even expressed their support for the small island states, especially those in the Pacific, in order to strengthen their economic and environmental situation.

In addition, they have urged North Korea to negotiate its nuclear program and missiles, while Pyongyang opposes it until international sanctions are lifted.

They have also taken steps to expand the supply of vaccines against the corona virus worldwide, and welcomed India's plan to resume vaccine exports next month.
