Damascus-SANA

Today, the Arab Center for Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD) held a regional training course on “Mathematical Modeling of Groundwater” via video conference technology, with the participation of 60 trainees from 17 Arab countries, lasting for ten days.

ACSAD Director General, Dr. Nasr El-Din El-Obeid, said in a statement to SANA that the aim of the course, which is being held in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “UNESCO,” is to enhance Arab capabilities in the field of using modern technologies to find effective solutions to the groundwater issue, which is expected to increase pressures. It has a future due to “population growth and the effects of climate change”.

Dr. Al-Obaid indicated that the center has carried out, in this context, many studies, research, conferences, seminars, workshops and water projects in many Arab countries, including “Syria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Kuwait and Sudan,” noting that ACSAD experts and researchers during the course period will present theoretical and practical lectures on modeling. Hydrogeology, groundwater modeling, and a mechanism for preparing technical cadres that contribute to developing the management of groundwater resources in the Arab countries.

The course program includes a study of evaluating the current situation of groundwater basins, knowing water levels and their changes, predicting the future water situation according to the quantities of nutrition and drainage, identifying promising areas for investment in this field, studying groundwater pollution and making recommendations to address that.
