The opening was at the worst imaginable time: Evi Thomas has been unpacked shop in Gilching for a year now.

But it has now developed into a real meeting place.

Gilching

- It was at a time when Corona was throwing the world upside down. Events were canceled, shops had to close. Evi Thoma from Gilching, however, remained brave and opened her unpackaged store exactly one year ago, despite all prophecies of doom. In the meantime she has increased the range from 400 to 1000 products. “I was very fortunate that my shop counts as a grocery retailer and that it was therefore allowed to open,” she says. "Of course, in compliance with all hygienic requirements, which is a matter of course for me."

In the meantime, the shop across from the Gilching town hall has developed into a meeting place for all those people who value products with a certificate of origin and who try to do their shopping without plastic packaging. “My customers come from all walks of life. Regardless of whether it is a well-paid family man or parents with many children who buy their staple groceries by the sack, ”says Thoma. Anyone who has discovered the advantage of this individual shopping option will be happy to come back. In the unpackaged shop, you can just buy a bay leaf when you no longer need it - or even 50 grams of flour. The prerequisite is that you have to bring your own cans or bags for packing.

The choice of suppliers is particularly important to the former medical assistant. This includes young people trying their hand at a startup. “It is indeed very time-consuming to find the small manufacturers or self-marketers who offer products that are not available anywhere else. But it's worth it, ”says Thoma. As an example, she cites her toilet paper supplier of toilet paper. There are young people in the Sauerland who are committed to environmental protection. According to Thoma, in 2020 they came up with the idea of collecting the waste paper from the surrounding companies, recycling it and making toilet paper from it. They put the proceeds back into trees that are planted around the world. In the meantime they have even received the seal of the Blue Angel.

When Thoma heard about it, it was clear to her: “It has to go into my shop, because here I can explain to people what is special about it.” The 48-year-old mother of three is generally happy when she brings her customers with her Can surprise taste sensations. “My shock-frozen strawberries only develop their aroma in the mouth. They are a bit more expensive, but they also taste the way strawberries should taste. ”Their assortment ranges from loose staple foods to washing balls, sweets, coffee, cocoa, broken chocolate, vegetables and fruit. Most of it comes from the region. Thoma: “I'm also trying more and more to support regional farmers who are converting to organic.” Thoma only does without meat and sausage products. It is open from Monday to Saturday - except on Wednesdays. ULI SINGER
