Residents of Be'er Sheva can no longer remain silent, after Ahmad al-Jarjawi of Misgav Shalom was murdered in the city over the weekend, in a case that upset the capital of the Negev.

Many in the city complain about fear and call for restoring order to the area and fighting Jewish and Arab criminals, and this is joined by the Bedouin neighbors, who also demand a harsh hand against the criminals and ask: do not generalize.

The word that is repeated from the descriptions of the inhabitants is fear.

"There is a fear of burglary and theft in Be'er Sheva. We live it every day. There is fear in the city," says Erez Bitton, a resident of the city. "My wife is afraid to walk around the street. It is not clear what is happening in the city."

Doral and Yael, a couple of residents, say that they "avoid traveling to places that are prone to disaster, because of history.

Nofar, another resident, says that "there are women who are afraid to walk around and run in the streets. It does not make sense for women to be afraid to walk around the city."

"There is a crazy wave of crime. From the robbery of the young man and woman outside Turner - since then there has been an escalation in the feeling of insecurity, dangerous driving on the roads, burglary, protection and in some cases it is noon. It has not happened in the past," The Negev Promotion Forum, a body launched this month that focuses on the subject. It demands that the government toughen the punishment. "It's scary to walk around the city in the evening. As a mother of three, I avoid traveling at night, do not go for walks in the dark and travel on the roads. The Israeli government must embark on an illegal weapons collection operation. We are losing the Negev and losing the battle. "

The Be'er Sheva municipality is initiating patrols of residents who will walk around the city in order to increase the sense of security.

"We understand the fears of the residents, we understand the pain," says Deputy Mayor Shimon Tobol, who initiated the project.

"There is a very strong sense of insecurity. The great pain is that the government is not doing anything about it. Unfortunately, the mayor and the municipality are being handcuffed."

"The punishment for criminal elements in the south is neither sufficient nor deterrent."

Another initiative is that of Michael Lev, a resident of Beer Sheva who recently set up WhatsApp groups on the subject, out of a desire to help in real time those who are in a situation of danger. "There is no security in the city. People are afraid, women are afraid to walk down the street, the police are present but do nothing," Lev says, explaining that the groups' goal is to "reach everyone in distress in real time. There are thousands in groups, and many volunteers. There are also young people. "Bedouins and also young Jews who do what they want, harm public property. It's scary to walk around the city."

Noam Lavie, a resident of Be'er Sheva and one of the volunteers in the group, points out a series of serious criminal phenomena that concern the locals. "There is protection taken from businessmen. There was a murder on Friday night on a busy street in Be'er Sheva. It scares people," he says, believing these WhatsApp groups can help. "The police do not come and can not come to any event that takes place in the city and immediately. The groups respond immediately to events in such a way that we receive a request and arrive immediately. "

"There is no need to talk in sectors - there are criminals in every sector"

In the words of some of the residents, there is an atmosphere of tension and suspicion in front of the Bedouin neighbors in the background of the events.

The sector seeks to avoid generalizations, and joins the demand to maintain the security of the residents of the Negev.

"The responsibility for crime in the south lies with everyone," said Faiz Abu Sahiban, the mayor of Rahat.

"One sector or another must not be blamed, and the whole of Bedouin society must not be generalized. The police must treat criminals harshly. There is no need to talk about sectors - there are criminals in every sector."

Raed Abu Alkien, a resident of Umm al-Hiran, is also preoccupied.

"The Bedouin population has about 350,000 inhabitants, it is forbidden to punish and generalize them all. The Bedouin population contributes to the economy of Be'er Sheva, it is forbidden to reach a situation where a finger is pointed at the entire Bedouin sector in the Negev," he says.

"The Bedouin doctors and nurses in Soroka are saving lives regardless of the sector. We demand security for all residents of the Negev, Bedouin and Jews."

The Israel Police said in response that it takes the phenomenon of violence in the area seriously, and that it is constantly "working against crime, bullying and harassment in order to maintain public peace and security."

"All cases receive a thorough investigative envelope in order to arrive at an investigation of the truth and exhaust the law with those involved. We appeal to the public to call Hotline 100 in any exceptional event," it was reported.
