While the Union and the SPD are in a close race to win the election, another party is about to return to the Bundestag after decades.

According to ARD projections, the Südschleswigsche Voters' Association (SSW), based in Schleswig-Holstein, has a seat in the Bundestag.

As a non-attached MP, Stefan Seidler from Flensburg could in future represent the Danish minority in parliament.

The party of the national minorities of the Danes and Frisians benefits from a special rule in the electoral law.

According to this, national minorities are exempt from the five percent threshold in federal elections.

As a party of a national minority, the SSW only has to win so many votes that it is entitled to a seat according to the calculation process.

The SSW could only be elected in Schleswig-Holstein.

In the early days of the Federal Republic of Germany, the SSW was represented by a member of the Bundestag from 1949 to 1953.

After 1961, the party stopped its efforts due to a lack of prospects of success and concentrated on local and state politics.

For the first time in 60 years, the voters' association ran for a federal election.

According to the latest projections, the SPD and Union are still close to each other after the federal election.

The Social Democrats come to the ARD to 25.7 percent, followed by the Union with 24.5 percent.

According to ZDF projections, the SPD comes to 26 percent and the Union to 24.5 percent.

In both projections, the Greens are in third place, followed by the FDP and AfD.

The left therefore comes to five percent.
