Do I have to be vaccinated to vote?

On Sunday (September 26th) the first federal election will take place under Corona conditions.

Which rules then apply in the voting booth.

Germany - When the new Bundestag is elected on Sunday (September 26th) *, pandemic conditions will still prevail in Germany.

In concrete terms: Corona rules must also be adhered to when voting.

But what does that mean for voters?

Is there a 2G or a 3G rule in the polling station for the 2021 federal election *?

Federal election 2021: Corona rules for voters and election workers in the polling station

Neither nor.

For the election on September 26th, only mask and distance rules apply in NRW *.

Voters and election workers do not have to be vaccinated, recovered or tested.

Unlike in other indoor areas of public life, such as in the cinema or in restaurants, there are no 3G rules.

According to the current Corona Protection Ordinance, a mask is required in all indoor areas in North Rhine-Westphalia.

This also includes polling stations.

The mask requirement applies both on the paths within the polling station and in the voting booth itself. Only medical masks are permitted.

So at least one surgical mask must be worn.

Everyday masks made of fabric are not allowed.

Do those who refuse to wear a mask have to pay a fine in the federal election on September 26th?

Election workers who spend several hours in the polling station in the 2021 federal election and have to count votes * are not allowed to wear a mask if the seats are separated by glass panes or if the minimum distance of 1.5 meters to other people is guaranteed.

And what about mask refusals?

Do you get a penalty if you check the box "topless"?

In fact not.

The state government has included a corresponding paragraph in the current Corona Protection Ordinance specifically for this purpose.

“Voting is a fundamental right,” a spokesman for the NRW Interior Ministry who was responsible for the elections recently told the

German Press Agency (DPA)

.

One could therefore not simply exclude mask refusers from voting at the polling station.

Polling station could be cleared for mask refusers in NRW - but there are exceptions

"In voting rooms, eligible voters who violate the mask requirement should be enabled to exercise their right to vote without endangering other people through suitable measures by the electoral board," it says in a corresponding passage in the Corona Protection Ordinance.

What that means exactly is not stated there.

It would be conceivable that the polling station for such a mask refuser would be cleared except for the election workers.

If an eviction is not possible, the mask refuser endangers the other voters and then the electoral board may throw him out of the polling station according to the Corona Protection Ordinance.

Avoid the corona rules at the polling station - postal voting for the 2021 federal election makes it possible

The decision, which is why, unlike in the leisure sector by the state government no 3G rule is converted into polling stations, justified the speaker of the NRW interior ministry against the

also with the sentence: "Voting is a fundamental right."

If you prefer to vote from home instead of at the polling station, you can also send your cross by postal vote in the 2021 federal election *.

But be careful: the ballot letter must be available at the address given on the ballot envelope by 6 p.m. on election Sunday, September 26, 2021 at the latest.

The letter should therefore arrive in the mailbox a few days in advance, but no later than Friday (September 24th).

The postal vote must be requested in advance.
