Germany voted, but it has not - yet - turned the page on the Merkel era.
Neck to neck, the Social Democrat Olaf Scholz and the conservative Armin Laschet competed during the campaign to embody the authentic heir of the Chancellor.
Upon arrival, they both claim a mandate to govern, but the best placed may not be the most "legitimate" dolphin.
It will take long negotiations to form a coalition - possibly with three parties, a formula unheard of since the 1950s. The delicate search for compromise between ideologically distant positions seems to promise Germany a moderate coalition, in the extension of the sixteen years. of "merkelism" - this method which consists in smoothing the corners and defending the economic interests of the country by protecting it as much as possible from the upheavals of the world.
The Germans value this comfort, which will remain the main legacy of the Chancellor.
