The new crown pneumonia epidemic in Hong Kong raged last year, and non-emergency medical services were greatly affected. Some chronically ill patients were reluctant to go to the hospital for follow-up due to fear of contracting the virus.

The Kowloon Chinese Hospital Cluster of the Hospital Authority tried out a pilot telemedicine project last year. Since it can reduce the burden on patients, it has been well received so far. For example, the follow-up rate of the Pediatric Diabetes Cloud Clinic is as high as 85.2%.

Among them, Lu Junnuo, the "fighting star of tomorrow" who suffered from diabetes when he was a child, needs to receive training 4 to 5 days a week.

From his residence to the hospital, together with waiting in line and attending a doctor, it takes two hours to go back and forth, which affects the training and reading time.

However, after adopting the cloud clinic service, it only takes 15 minutes to complete the follow-up consultation, which means that each follow-up consultation can save 105 minutes, which is nearly 90% less time than the outpatient service.

7-year-old diagnosed type 1 diabetes, follow-up consultation takes 2 hours

The 13-year-old Lu Junnuo is among the best in school. He loves fencing since he was a child. In recent years, he has achieved a lot of good results in academic competitions. He was also invited to be selected to the Hong Kong Youth Fencing Team on October 4.

However, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 7 years old. At that time, he suddenly developed symptoms such as weight loss, lethargy, and thirst. "Usually drank 8 glasses of water a day, and drank two bottles of water within 2 minutes." He said that the doctor did not. The cause of the disease is clear, but it has been determined that it has nothing to do with genetics and diet. The current condition is stable, but long-term injections of insulin drugs are required to control blood sugar.

As the rising star of swordsmanship, Lu needs to receive training 4 to 5 days a week, each time lasting 5 to 6 hours.

Although he has a follow-up visit every 3 months, he needs to take care of his studies at the same time. Therefore, the follow-up visit will reduce the time for training and reading books.

It took him two hours to go back and forth from his residence in Hung Hom to the hospital, together with waiting in line and attending a doctor.

However, since starting to use the cloud clinic service in August last year, the follow-up consultation can be completed in 15 minutes by only being in the network environment, and each follow-up consultation can save 87.5% of the time, that is, 105 minutes.

Lu Junnuo said that although a sensor must be installed under the belly and connected to a monitoring machine placed in a trouser pocket 24 hours a day and night, it does not affect the action of the sword.

Aiming at Zhang Jialang: Fighting and intimidating to gain experience

But will diabetes affect fencing performance?

Lu Junnuo said that because he uses a continuous blood glucose monitoring system, he can better measure the glucose level in the body.

Although a sensor must be installed under the belly and connected to the monitoring machine placed in the trouser pocket 24 hours a day, day and night, he said that it does not affect the movement of the sword.

Even because diabetic patients need to strictly control their diet, they are more self-disciplined than other athletes of the same age.

When asked about his future goals, Lu said that he would focus on his studies, but if he could take into account the training of fencing, he might consider focusing on the competition after the DSE Diploma Examination, hoping to achieve some good results before returning to university life.

Fencing athlete Zhang Jialang won the second gold medal in Hong Kong's history at the Tokyo Olympics in July. He found the target, "He will target him (Zhang Jialang), and will try to intimidate him to gain experience."

In the future, it will develop into the core system of telemedicine

The information technology coordinator of the Kowloon Chinese Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr. Kaijun McKay, said that the cloud clinic system was developed last year for remote diagnosis and waiting management of patients, and it will be developed into the core system of remote medical care in the future.

He pointed out that under the new crown epidemic, clinical departments and patients are more willing to adopt non-contact diagnosis services.

The operation of the cloud clinic is simple. After receiving a call from the hospital to confirm their identity, the patient only needs to wait for the SMS to issue a link to the video program. After entering the program, re-confirming the identity, the patient can begin the consultation.

The current system has been used in the Diabetes Clinic of Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the Orthopedic Specialist Clinic, and the Pediatric Department of Kwong Wah Hospital; it has also cooperated with the Kowloon Hospital across the hospital to save patients' time to travel between the two hospitals.

The patient's video consultation is more willing to disclose the condition

Dr. Huang Minyi, deputy consultant of the Pediatric Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital, said that after the first wave of the epidemic last year, the consultation rate of children's diabetes clinics dropped significantly due to the concerns of patients and their families about contracting the virus. The consultation rate dropped from nearly 90% in January. By February nearly 60%.

Subsequently, the clinic launched the cloud clinic plan in a pilot form in August last year. At that time, there were 23 consultations and the follow-up rate was as high as 85.2%.

She also said that since some introverted patients switch to the cloud clinic, they are more willing to disclose their condition.
