Opinion | The media must demand clear answers to the failure of Gilboa Prison Israel today

2021-09-28T20:09:35.073Z

The affair raised the most important basic question - who is guarding us? • The terrorists may have been caught, but this should not cause us complacency and continued routine

Three weeks have passed since six security prisoners managed to escape from Gilboa Prison.

The affair exploded on New Year's Eve and raised the most basic and important question - who is guarding us?

Since then, the security forces have managed to impressively capture the six terrorists and with the end of the operation the whole matter, naturally, has dropped from the media agenda.

To me, this is a big mistake.

Although we were present to rediscover the long arm of the GSS and the IDF, this should not cause us complacency and continued routine. As of this moment and in light of the perception of the Minister of Internal Security, Amar Bar-Lev, that he does not see efficiency in decapitation, I recognize the possibility of rendering the story as a growing possibility every day, although it is clear that the failures have not yet been comprehensively addressed. Between falling asleep on guard and freedom where prisoners move from cell to cell at their request, the public feeling is that the prison is not staffed by officials committed or skilled enough for the task assigned to them and they maneuver between systemic negligence and impossible policy. This puts the security of the residents of Israel in constant question.

The very seizure of prisoners is only part of the duty of the guards to keep us safe.

It is in no way intended to instill in us a sense of security, since it is not inconceivable that such a case exists.

The Minister's early call for the establishment of a government commission of inquiry also lowers responsibilities of the operational echelon in the field, and may delay executive decisions that must be taken in the form of an emergency.

The media in Israel have a duty to demand progress and updates regarding the implementation of actions to improve the prison system, in Gilboa Prison in particular and in the State of Israel in general.

They must demand clear answers from the IPS commissioner, answers that are clean of public relations and without clear statements.

As it stands at this stage the right to a fair trial so do we have the basic right to security.

We must insist on exercising this right to the end without being blinded by the achievement of perception.

It in itself represents only the first step in ensuring a safety routine for the citizens of the State of Israel.
