Penzberg car park facade: textile, aluminum or wood?

Penzberg -

On the corner of Birkenstrasse and Weidenweg there is still the little house that was home to the “Chillout” youth club until a few months ago (it has now moved to Christianstrasse). The entire site resembles a construction site. Next door is the new family pool, which is due to be inaugurated in spring 2023. The parking garage is necessary to accommodate the cars of the bath visitors. It is created on the site of the former "chill-out". The building owner is the Stadtwerke. In this context, a roundabout is to be built on Seeshaupter Straße - with access to the parking garage.

The construction of the multi-storey car park is scheduled to start next spring, according to the director of the municipal utility, André Behre - the building application should be submitted soon. Construction will take until autumn next year, he said in the building committee meeting this week. There, Behre and city architect Justus Klement presented the status of the project. Accordingly, all parking spaces that are required for the family bathroom are accommodated in the parking garage. Disabled-friendly parking spaces are also provided for the family pool and the neighboring district gym. The multi-storey car park is to have five levels - half a storey of which is sunk into the ground on the west side facing Seeshaupter Strasse. The multi-storey car park is also intended to form an “optical unit” with the neighboring thermal power station.According to Behre, a photovoltaic system for self-consumption for technology and e-charging stations is planned on the roof of the new building. The charging stations are planned in "sufficient numbers", which can be expanded so that theoretically every parking space could be equipped with a charging station, he reported.

It is still unclear what the building facade should look like

However, the question of what the building facade should look like is still open.

According to city architect Justus Klement, a construction made of aluminum slats is currently being planned.

But there are alternatives, he said.

Specifically, Klement mentioned wooden slats and a textile covering.

One can still examine these alternatives, said Stadtwerke manager Behre - even if the time is short.

“A multi-storey car park is never nice,” said committee member Martin Janner (PM).

But there are good examples.

In his view, however, an aluminum facade is not included.

"Aluminum is not the most advanced material," criticized Janner.

His group would like a green facade.

Hardi Lenk (SPD) also advised against aluminum.

“This is the worst building material we have in today's world,” he said.

"A multi-storey car park is not nice anyway if we also stretch aluminum in front of it ...".

Lenk left the sentence unfinished.

Fire protection aspects must be checked for wooden slats

Behre was basically open to alternatives.

The use of wooden slats is being examined, with fire protection aspects also having to be taken into account.

A textile covering is also tested.

City architect Klement said that he strongly believes that a textile variant can be achieved.

Trees could then be planted in front of it.

He also pointed out that intensive greening was planned on the forecourt of the family pool, gymnasium and parking garage as well as around the parking garage.

A green facade is possible, said Behre.

However, they want to keep the car park “slim” in terms of maintenance.

A facade greening needs care and irrigation.

"I advocate less effort."
