Wittenbeck - The steam locomotive "Molli" collided with a mobile home on Sunday morning in the Rostock district (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania).
The motorhome was torn apart by the force of the impact.
The driver of the mobile home (72) died at the scene of the accident.
His co-driver (71) was seriously injured and transported to hospital, the Rostock police announced on Sunday afternoon.
The 25 passengers in the steam locomotive were therefore uninjured.
The fatal accident occurred on Sunday at around 10:50 a.m. in Wittenbeck at a level crossing.
According to the first findings of the police, the mobile home is said to have approached the unrestricted level crossing.
"Because of the St. Andrew's cross, the 72-year-old driver stopped his mobile home at the level crossing," the police say.
And further: "For an unexplained cause, the man suddenly continued his journey and overlooked the bathing railway coming from the right from Kühlungsborn."

The 72-year-old motorhome driver was trapped and succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.
Firefighters were only able to rescue the 72-year-old man dead from the wreckage of the mobile home.
His 71-year-old passenger was seriously injured in the collision and was transported to a hospital in Roststock.
The mobile home is said to have been dragged about 50 meters with the steam locomotive "Molli" in the accident, media report.
According to the police, 45 emergency services from the Wittenbeck and Kühlungsborn fire brigades and the rescue service were involved in the rescue and recovery work.
A special crane had to be requested to recover the mobile home;
also to lift the locomotive.

The railway line is expected to remain closed for the whole of Sunday due to rescue and clean-up work.
