Ryder Cup: United States sweeps Europe and scores historic victory

2021-09-29T11:52:26.490Z

The Americans won with a record score (19-9) in the biennial golf match against the Europeans. Superior in doubles as in singles, Team USA's victory has sometimes turned to demonstration on the course of Whistling Straits (Wisconsin).

Led (11-5) after the doubles of the first two days, the European team knew that it would be difficult for them to keep the trophy won in 2018 in France during the singles matches played this Sunday.

In fact, the Americans left no chance to their opponents and delighted their noisy supporters who had made the trip to Wisconsin, on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Ryder Cup 2021: the United States overthrows Europe and wins their 27th trophy

Steve Stricker had done the math on Saturday night: his players were missing three and a half points to snatch the Ryder Cup from their opponents.

By building his team and placing a few entry-level leaders, the American captain knew he could cut short the ambitions of Padraig Harrington, his European counterpart.

The latter did not fail to recall that despite the score, he believed in "the miracle of Medinah", alluding to the victorious comeback of the Europeans in 2012. It was without counting on the individual quality of the US armada.

Little music

On the fairways of the Whistling Straits course, the little music played from the start by Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler set the tone. If the recent winner of the FedEx Cup quickly appeared too strong for the Irishman Shane Lowry, the hand put of the Texas rookie who made five birdies on the first six holes - against the world n ° 1 Jon Rahm, surprised all the observers. What about the opening of Bryson DeChambeau who hit a missile from tee 1 to land his drive on the green. The Californian immediately made a crazy putt for the eagle! Despite a birdie, the record holder for matches won and points scored in the event, Spaniard Sergio Garcia himself, had to lose.

Over the course of this Sunday marked by the domination of the US stars of the PGA Tour, the closer the games got to the goal, the more the leaderboard turned red.

The scores adopted the flamboyant color of American stars.

After three and a half hours of play, the Americans were leading in nine of the twelve singles matches: Cantlay (3up), Scheffler (4up), DeChambeau (2up), Morikawa (2up), Johnson (2up), Koepka (1up), Thomas (3up), English (1up) and Spieth (1up) had the points.

Finau was tied when needed for a half-unit.

Only McIlroy (2up) and Fitzpatrick gave the change for the Europeans.

First point for McIllroy

In fact, if Rory McIlroy won his single (3 & 2) at the expense of the American Xander Sc Chaudele and therefore offered the first point of the singles to Europe, Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler, then Bryson DeChambeau and finally Collin Morikawa settled the accounts in favor of the United States.

"With all these fans, we get so much energy"

, confided the latter, on his little cloud just after the victory.

The mirage of Medinah ended in a nightmare, causing the tears of Rory McIlroy, unable to control his sobs at the time of recognizing the defeat of Europe.

“I love this European Ryder Cup team.

It is by far the best golf experience.

I hope that the young people who watch this event or the Solheim Cup will be inspired ... "

Player quality

Obviously all smiles, American captain Steve Stricker underlined the quality of his players at the microphone of American television:

“All these players have a bigger track record than mine.

I just made sure they were having a good time.

They came to Whistling Straits with a mission in mind and they accomplished it. ”

In addition to their overwhelming domination, the Americans signed a historic victory with a score never reached: 19 points to 9. The previous record already belonged to them (18.5 points to 9.5) since 1981.

“This group of players is really special.

Steve Stricker noted at the closing ceremony.

We will indeed have to get used to seeing this new generation articulated around the big names that are Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.

And Europeans will certainly have to draw inspiration from this renewal with a view to the 44th edition of the Ryder Cup scheduled for 2023 at the Marco Simone Golf Club, near Rome (Italy).
