Update from September 27, 5.44 a.m.:

In the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the SPD of Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig clearly prevailed against the political competition, according to the preliminary official final result.

The Social Democrats achieved 39.6 percent of the vote in the election on Sunday, while the AfD received 16.7 percent and the CDU 13.3 percent, as the election management announced on Monday night in Schwerin.

In initial reactions on election evening, Schwesig left all coalition options open.

According to the preliminary result, the left received 9.9 percent of the vote.

The Greens and FDP moved back into the Schwerin state parliament with 6.3 and 5.8 percent respectively - the Greens after five years and the FDP after ten years.

Compared to 2016, the SPD improved by nine percentage points.

The AfD dropped by around four points, the CDU with its top candidate Michael Sack slipped by around six points to a record low.

The left lost a good three points.

Of the 36 constituencies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, 34 went directly to the SPD, while the CDU and AfD were each able to book a direct mandate for themselves.

In 2016, the SPD acquired 26 constituencies directly, while there were seven for the CDU and three for the AfD.

The SPD has 34 seats in the new state parliament.

The second strongest force is the AfD with 14 seats, followed by the CDU with twelve seats.

The Left got nine seats, the Greens and FDP five each.

The turnout was 70.8 percent - after 61.6 percent in 2016.

A coalition of the SPD and CDU has ruled Schwerin since 2016, which would again have a comfortable majority.

An alliance between the SPD and the Left, which already existed in the northeast, and a coalition of the SPD, Greens and FDP would also be conceivable.

Update from September 26th, 11:15 p.m.:

Due to the furious victory of the SPD in the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig has several coalition

options

for her next government. The 47-year-old can continue the alliance with the punished CDU or rule with the also plucked left. With the re-entry of the FDP and the Greens into the state parliament in Schwerin, a traffic light coalition would also be possible. On the evening of the election, Schwesig did not want to commit himself. "We are now waiting for the final results and then see who can form stable majorities," said the SPD politician on ZDF.

Three things are decisive for a government: stable majorities, then social democratic issues such as a strong economy, good work, social cohesion and the environment and, thirdly, the reliability of the partner. According to Schwesig, the party committees will meet on Monday evening "and then we will see who we will have talks with". She is “of course very happy with the SPD here in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. We have clearly achieved our election target. We are again the strongest force and have even really grown. "She is" very proud to be Prime Minister of the most beautiful federal state in Germany - and that I can stay that way now. "

Update from September 26, 11 p.m.:

In the new projections, the Social Democrats are expanding their leadership even further after the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

According to the projections, the AfD was again the second strongest force with 17.3 to 18.1 percent, but suffered losses compared to the 2016 election.

The CDU with top candidate Michael Sack slipped to 13.9 to 14 percent and thus achieved by far its worst result in a state election in the state since 1990.

The left came to 9.4 to 9.5 percent and lost slightly compared to 2016.

The Greens were in the projections at 5.6 to 6.1 percent, the FDP came to 5.7 to 5.8 percent.

Both of them would be able to return to the state parliament - five years ago they had failed because of the five percent hurdle.

According to ZDF, the turnout was 73 percent and thus significantly higher than in the previous election.

At that time it was 61.6 percent.

The SPD, with Prime Minister Schwesig, who had won 30.6 percent in the polls five years ago, increased by around eight to eight and a half percentage points, according to the projections. At the same time, the second and third placed parties, AfD and CDU, lost 20.8 percent and 19 percent respectively in 2016. On the evening of the election, Schwesig left her preferences open. "We are now waiting for the final results and then see who can form stable majorities," she said on ZDF. She sees three prerequisites for a government: firstly, stable majorities, secondly, social democratic issues such as a strong economy, good work, social cohesion and the environment, and thirdly, the reliability of the partner. Who will sit in the Schwerin state parliament in the future?

It sounds almost certain that the SPD will continue to govern - but with whom will Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig form a coalition?

Update from September 26, 5:35 p.m.:

After 15 years in the coalition, the CDU had figured out a chance of winning the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

But the numbers spoke a completely different language in the course of the election campaign.

The Christian Democrats currently have around 15 percent.

Leading candidate Michael Sack has apparently already drawn conclusions from this - and has refrained from some major campaign appearances.

Update from September 26, 5:25 p.m.:

The polls see the SPD by far ahead of all other parties.

That could mean a landslide victory for the incumbent Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig.

She is standing for re-election for the first time.

The Social Democrats had completely focused their election campaign on Schwesig and promoted them with: “The woman for MV”.

State election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: voter turnout at 32.5 percent - Schwesig before landslide victory?

Update from September 26, 5:15 p.m.:

The turnout for the state elections was reportedly not listed separately at 2 p.m. because the deviations from the federal elections are only marginal.

“We gave everything to the end,” said the 47-year-old after visiting the polling station in Schwerin.

The rest would now be in the hands of the citizens.

State election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Schwesig before election victory - historic result possible

Update from September 26th, 11:19 am:

"For a strong economy, for good work with good wages, for social justice and for the protection of our environment and nature", Manuela Schwesig would like to stand up when she is re-elected Prime Minister.

The SPD politician said this in a video on Twitter on election day.

For Schwesig and the SPD, Sunday is also about being able to create something historical and achieve the best result in the history of the SPD Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

For this, the Social Democrats would have to receive more than 40.6 percent, the previous record from 2002. According to the latest surveys, however, this seems to be possible.

State election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: polling stations have opened - who rules in Schwerin?

Update from September 26, 8:20 a.m.:

The election campaign is over and the decision of who will rule Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for the next five years is now finally in the hands of the voters.

The polling stations have been open since 8 a.m.

In the last polls everything looked like a clear victory for Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig.

The first forecasts can be expected around 6 p.m.

State election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Who will rule Schwerin for the next five years?

Original message from September 26th:

Schwerin - When the citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany elect a new Bundestag on Sunday, September 26th and thus also indirectly vote on a successor to Angela Merkel in the Chancellery, the residents of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have to cast their votes twice.

Then Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig will have to stand for election in her federal state for the first time in order to remain head of the state for five more years.

State election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania 2021: incumbent Schwesig clearly ahead in surveys

The former family minister switched back to state politics in 2017 after the SPD Prime Minister Erwin Sellering had to resign due to cancer. For four years, Schwesig has been leading her party as the top candidate in the state elections in 2021 and, at least according to the latest polls, the 47-year-old has a good chance of securing the SPD's election victory in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

In the current polls, the Social Democrats receive around 40 percent of the vote.

That would correspond to a vote increase of around ten percentage points compared to the last election.

Schwesig can hardly be expected to win an election with these values.

It gets a lot more exciting if you take a look at the other parties.

Shortly before the election, the question of who will be the second strongest force in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania * remains largely open.

State election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2021: FDP and Greens fear entry into the state parliament

AfD and Union have both lost votes in the polls compared to 2016 and could deliver a heartbeat final for the second most votes behind the SPD. It will also be exciting to see whether the FDP and the Greens will be able to return to the state parliament, which in the last legislative period consisted of only four parliamentary groups. In surveys, both parties are just above the five percent hurdle.

It will also be interesting to see what influence the election result has on a possible coalition.

A continuation of the red-black state government is arithmetically very high probability in the realm of the possible.

However, depending on how strong the SPD's increase in votes ultimately turns out, an alliance of the SPD and the left could also achieve a majority in the state parliament.

Then Manuela Schwesig would be spoiled for choice.

A traffic light coalition (SPD, FDP, Greens) and a red-red-green alliance could also be possible.
