The Union achieved a historically poor result in the Bundestag election. Criticism is also growing in Bavaria, where the CSU also did poorly.

The Union achieved a historically poor result in the Bundestag election.

Criticism is also growing in Bavaria, where the CSU also did poorly.

Ebersberg

- It was a bitter evening for the CSU *.

The sister party of the CDU in Bavaria had to accept the worst result in over 70 years in the federal election *.

Although the Christian Socials received most of the direct mandates from the total of 46 constituencies in the Free State, at the end of the evening it was just 31.7 percent of the second votes.

Only in the 1949 elections did the CSU fare even worse.

The CSU had already made significant losses in 2017 - but the current decline in votes is once again drastic.

After severe losses in the federal election: CSU and CDU in distress - search for the guilty

Many see the main blame on the CDU * and its chairman Armin Laschet *, who had won the fight for chancellor just a few months before the election against Prime Minister Markus Söder *.

The CDU also delivered a historically poor result.

The Berlin political scientist Oskar Niedermayer spoke in an interview with the Handelsblatt of a "political meltdown" and his colleague Heinrich Oberreuter from Passau suspects that "violent internal party discussions about a personnel and content reorganization" would have to be conducted.

Söder, who had not missed an opportunity to tease the CDU chairman shortly after his defeat by Laschet, stood behind his alliance partner at a press conference on Monday, September 27, but emphasized that it was “a very serious one Time for the Union. ”Laschet himself was far less self-critical and still holds on to the possibility of a so-called Jamaica coalition (black, green, yellow) under his leadership.

Federal election 2021: Union with historically poor results - Laschet shows little insight

However, this lack of insight in view of the obsolete election defeat is a thorn in the side of many CSU politicians.

District chief Christian Bernreiter, questioned a Jamaica alliance.

"I have extreme stomach ache when I think of the price that one would have to pay," Bernreiter is quoted by listeners at the CSU board meeting.

Bavaria's Junge Union boss Christian Doleschal specifically named Laschet as the main reason for the Union's failure in the election.

The candidate for chancellor had "taken every faux pas with him until election day".

Fierce criticism from its own ranks: CSU MPs call Union brain dead

Andreas Lenz, CSU MP and member of the Bundestag from constituency 213 Erding-Ebersberg, put it particularly drastically on Twitter.

There he wrote on Monday afternoon: "The #Union seems brain-dead in parts - there is a lot to do!" Lenz leaves open which events exactly led Lenz to make this statement.

Meanwhile, there is heated debate under the Post about whether the CDU should consolidate its claim to government within a Jamaica coalition or whether it should move into the opposition.

In addition, the question is raised whether such a coalition, should it arise, should be led by Laschet.

Markus Söder or even Norbert Röttgen, who lost the election as CDU chairman to Laschet in January, are named as alternatives.

Ultimately, the Union will have to have some tough talks and clarify personnel issues.

They still have a little time for that.

FDP leader Christian Lindner announced that he would first want to talk to the Greens before entering into possible coalition talks with the Union or the SPD.
