The EU-wide uniform driving license has existed since the beginning of 1999.

If you still have an old rag, you have to exchange it now, otherwise it will be invalid.

Regensburg - Since the beginning of 1999 there has been a uniform driving license across Europe.

Since January 2013, driving licenses have only been issued for a limited period and have to be renewed every 15 years.

The result: Anyone who still has an old rag in their wallet has to exchange it for a new one.

This applies to all driving licenses issued before January 13, 2013.

To ensure that this happens as quickly as possible, the offices have drawn up a kind of step-by-step plan, as the Regensburg district * writes in a press release.

Regensburg: These age groups have to exchange their driver's license now

In the case of driving licenses issued by December 31, 1998, the exchange period is determined according to the year of birth of the license holder.

In the case of driving licenses issued after January 1, 1999, the year of issue is decisive.

The nationwide exchange campaign should be completed on January 19, 2033.

The mandatory exchange begins with those born between 1953 and 1958. People born during this period must exchange their driving license by January 19, 2022.

The driving licenses themselves remain largely unchanged, a new test is not necessary, and as a rule no other tests or examinations take place.

(By the way: Our brand new Regensburg newsletter informs you about all developments and results from the world cultural heritage city - and of course about all other important stories from Regensburg.)

Regensburg: These deadlines apply to exchanges

Next come those born between 1959 and 1964, which can be exchanged until January 19, 2023.

Born between 1965 and 1970 can exchange until January 19, 2024, and all born after 1971 until January 19, 2025. For those born before 1953 there is a special rule: You have until January 19, 2033 to exchange.

The following deadlines apply to persons whose driver's license was issued after January 1, 1999: The year of issue 1999 to 2001 must be exchanged by January 19, 2026, 2002 to 2004 by January 19, 2027, 2005 to 2007 by January 19, 2028. Year of issue 2008 has until January 19, 2029, 2009 to 2030, 2010 to 2031, 2011 to 2032 and 2012 to 2033.

An application form is required for this (at https://www.landkreis-regensburg.de/media/52097/problem-auf-umstellung-alt-fe-in-neu-fe.pdf), a current biometric photo, the old driver's license and an identification document with your current home address.

If the "old paper driving license" was not issued by the current authority of residence, a so-called copy of the index card must be requested from the authority that originally issued the driving license.

The cost of the new driver's license is 25.30 euros.

The district of Regensburg asks you to make an appointment by telephone on (0941) 40 09 43 2.
