Is the Bavarian coalition bursting? Söder asks Aiwanger to meet with the crisis

The CSU is pissed off at free voter boss Hubert Aiwanger.

“Unworthy” is his vice, snorted Markus Söder.

A crisis meeting is supposed to save the Bavarian coalition from breaking up.

Munich - On day 1 after the election, you can experience a rare spectacle in an unadorned conference room somewhere in Munich Central Station: the transformation of the riot-Aiwanger into the cuddly Hubert.

"I have zero concerns," says the Vice-Prime Minister, "that we can continue to work in Bavaria from Thursday in the old harmony".

Zero concerns?

Recently, members of the CSU have called for vaccination skeptic Aiwanger to resign, berated him in front of journalists and expressed serious doubts about the coalition.

You could also go with the Greens, said a minister.

Until recently, Aiwanger himself complained that he no longer felt comfortable with Markus Söder (“Even as an opposition you can achieve more in Berlin than in a state government”).

"Unworthy" he acted, scolded Söder.

Now everything shouldn't be an issue anymore?

Söder and Aiwanger - there is a rough tone in the Bavarian coalition

In fact, the situation is more tense than he admits. The once harmonious, at least pragmatic relationship in the bourgeois coalition has been cooling for months. The Free Voters suffer from the Prime Minister's going it alone and his full media presence. The coalition learned many of his plans from the newspaper. Only CSU ministers who depend on Söder's mercy can put up with something like that - Aiwanger rather reluctantly. On the other hand, the CSU complains that Lower Bavarians are making a name for themselves against their own government. That was the case with Corona, the debates about vaccinations, masks in schools and Aiwanger's threats with a constitutional lawsuit in the dispute about continued payment of wages for unvaccinated people.

The election tactics also weigh more heavily for the CSU.

Aiwanger's unsuccessful candidacy for Berlin brought him a hefty reimbursement of election campaign costs, but no seats.

It pinched 2.4 percentage points from other parties nationwide and 7.5 percentage points in Bavaria.

Söder is annoyed that that probably cost the “bourgeois majority” in Germany.

At the same time, the free voters in Eastern Bavaria are getting stronger, here at the expense of the CSU in their regular voters.

Söders Vice Manfred Weber now wants to work out a “demarcation strategy”.

Söder calls for "return to material politics"

The CSU boss is now setting a crisis summit. "Return to material politics" must now follow. You need a "hygiene process". Söder indirectly indicates that Aiwanger's own people in the parliamentary group and party quarreled with his style and course. It is an indication that the FW ministers Aiwanger (economy), Thorsten Glauber (environment) and Michael Piazolo (culture) are really not in line. All three do not have the reputation of being pillars in the cabinet - neither do many CSU ministers. Söder is now calling for the new climate protection law caught in the coalition to be launched quickly, as well as advances in digitization and a clearer school and daycare policy. The Bavarian cabinet meets again on Thursday.

Is the alliance bursting?

Black-green or black-red formations would also be mathematically possible, but the intersections in the content are smaller.

It would be uncomfortable for Söder, especially with the Greens.

From a human point of view, it actually works with Aiwanger when both of them sit together in private.

Aiwanger wants to save the Bavarian coalition

Aiwanger also wants to save the Bavarian coalition.

For him it's about the office, title, criticism whisper: company car and the recently very present personal protection.

Assumptions that he could throw it down do not come true for the time being.

The dispute “perhaps made a somewhat gruff impression during the election campaign,” he says.

But the mood is "much better than at the beginning of the coalition".

You can rely on his party.

"We are fair, collegial, willing to compromise."

Aiwanger: Twitter entry was a "mishap"

Hubert Aiwanger called his controversial Twitter entry with pre-election forecasts for the federal election yesterday as a "mishap". "It wasn't bad intent or anything else behind it," he said. It was not the intention to break a law. “It would also be absurd. We're not deliberately breaking the law. "

According to his own statements, the Federal Returning Officer checks whether there has been a violation of Section 32 of the Federal Electoral Act.

Aiwangers face a fine of up to 50,000 euros.

Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) criticized the incident sharply.

State Parliament President Ilse Aigner (CSU) asked for an apology.

"Deleting the tweet is not enough," she said.

“Aiwanger has done a lot of damage and should apologize publicly.

His silence on this is unacceptable. ”The FW boss said:“ It is not beneath my dignity to apologize. ”He left it open whether and when he would actually apologize.
