Middle School Rector: "Are viewed as inferior"

The fact that middle schools often have to fight for students and lead a rather neglected existence is nothing new.

But the corona pandemic has apparently increased this effect.

This is what Ulrich Throner (58), the principal at the Rottach-Egern middle school, says.

Rottach-Egern - The middle school in Rottach-Egern had to cope with a blatant slump in the new fifth graders at the beginning of this school year.

In an interview, Rector Ulrich Throner (58) talks about this development, the reasons and how the trend can be stopped.

Mr. Throner, you are struggling with a drop in student numbers at your middle school.

How dramatic is the situation?

It's like this: Before the Corona times we had three fifth classes of 20 students each, now we have two fifth classes with a total of 30 students.

So the number has almost halved.

That is quite glaring.

How did this break-in come about?

There is a fundamental attitude behind this: The high school diploma is still viewed as inferior in our society.

Currently, there is also the fact that because of Corona, the transition to secondary school and grammar school has been easier this year.

They tried not to obstruct the students - and the parents took advantage of this opportunity.

The grammar school and the secondary school are still perceived as the royal road.

Because of the corona-related restrictions, we were also not able to show so well in the past school year what the middle school really is and what opportunities the graduation opens up.

Do you think some parents have chosen the wrong school career for their children?

I believe that the right decisions have not always been made this year.

There were students with whom we saw that they might have been better off with us.

For example, children who still need a permanent contact person at school and are overwhelmed by the specialist teacher system at grammar school and secondary school.

But the parents have often made an emotional decision here.

This will probably also be noticeable in the number of returns.

It could be that we will have very large classes in the eighth and ninth grades.

What are the specific effects of the decline in fifth graders on your school?

From the seventh grade onwards, we offer the opportunity to attend the Mittlere-Reife-Zug.

With smaller fifth grades it could be difficult to reach the appropriate number of students for the M-Zug.

But we definitely want to keep the offer.

So it is important to stop the downward trend.

What can be done to change the way people think about middle school?

Before Corona, we were actually on the right track.

Politicians had already recognized that high school education is just as important to society as academic education.

For example, there was the “Training Day” at the vocational school.

Some parents have said: My child would have the grades for Realschule or Gymnasium, but because they want to go in the technical direction, middle school is also an option.

With the second educational path, the students can still achieve a higher degree or even develop in an academic direction.

What exactly can middle school do to promote itself?

We hope that we can offer events again.

One of the successes was the “Company Training Day”, which we organized especially for elementary school students.

That was very, very well received.

If the Corona conditions allow, we want to expand this further and invite the third and fourth grades to do so.

This is where the children find out what craft professions actually mean.

What does the installer actually do?

How versatile is the painting profession?

We have to bring that back to consciousness.
