At 140 kilometers an hour, it raced towards communities and caused floods and power outages.

Toscana - Just last week, several tornadoes raged in Italy.

On Sunday, another tornado hit the Tuscan coast at 140 kilometers per hour and caused chaos: people had to struggle with uprooted trees, severe floods, worn roofs and power outages.

“An intense weather event, but not unusual for late summer,” said the responsible director of the Tuscan weather service, commenting on the developments.

Storm in Italy: Underpasses were also under water

The tornado hit land on Sunday afternoon on the north coast of Tuscany near the cities of Carrara, Massa and Marina di Pisa and devastated the villages. It rained heavily for about half an hour and the streets were flooded. The roads became impassable rivers. Underpasses were also flooded and cars got stuck. As far as we know, there were no injuries. Traffic on the streets came to a standstill, numerous cars were damaged, falling trees hit houses and cars.

The gusts of wind of up to 140 kilometers per hour also covered roofs, including that of the swimming pool in Carrara.

In total, the storm raged for around an hour.

The mayors of the affected cities plan to keep the schools closed on Monday in order to first check the buildings for damage.

Bernardo Gozzini, director of the Tuscany Environmental Monitoring Bureau, told

La Nazione Pisa

newspaper

that tornadoes are widespread along the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Tuscan coast.

One or two of these weather events can be expected every year.

Storm in Italy: Weather alarm warns people and prevents worse

Meteorologists had foreseen the storm and sounded the alarm. This prevented worse things from happening. Because originally the traditional procession of the Gioco del Ponte was scheduled for this Sunday in the area. Hundreds of people in medieval costumes march through the streets.

The tornado also caused restrictions elsewhere.

For example, the SS12, the busy Brenner State Road near Bagni di Lucca, had to be closed due to numerous fallen trees.

But an emergency team cleaned the roadway within a very short time so that the road section could be opened again shortly afterwards.

There were also strong thunderstorms, covered houses and fallen trees in Arezzo and Bibbiena.

Valtiberina, Valdichiana, Bivigliano and Pistoia reported rain and hailstorms.

Large hailstones also fell to the ground near Florence.

The storm hit the city of Pisa, which has around 90,000 inhabitants, but no significant damage was reported there.
