The Union experienced a debacle in the federal election.
Now a survey shows what would have been possible with Markus Söder instead of Armin Laschet.
Berlin / Munich - at the end of April 2021, the Union decided on Armin Laschet as candidate for chancellor in the federal election in 2021 * - and not on Markus Söder.
A poll shortly after the election now suggests: This decision was fatal.
According to the survey by the polling institute Forsa, the CDU and CSU would have received more than 30 percent of the vote with Söder as a candidate.
Manfred Güllner, Forsa boss, explained this to the news portal N-tv.de - for comparison: With Laschet, the Union received 24.1 percent.
A quarter of the 5,000 respondents stated that they would have "definitely" voted for the Union if Söder had been the Union candidate.
In contrast, there is cohesiveness to Armin Laschet.
According to the poll for the federal election, this is “extremely low”.
Survey after the federal election in 2021: With Söder, Union would have gained more than 30 percent
The election result represents a historic debacle for the CDU / CSU. In the 2017 federal election, the sister parties received 32.9 percent of the vote.
The day after the election, Armin Laschet had already affirmed that he had a “personal stake” in the result.
“It wasn't enough for first place, that was our claim,” said Laschet.

Now the Union is in coalition negotiations.
According to Laschet, the preferred alliance is a Jamaica coalition, with the FDP and the Greens.
Another survey shows, however, that the population prefers a different coalition. * (Tu / dpa)
