Can you fix carbon dioxide to reduce it?

A climate protection project in Fürth is now trying to do this - with the help of rock.

Fürth - What can we do to slow down global warming?

Avoiding CO2 is not enough on its own, says the Fürth-based company "Carbon Drawdown Initiative GmbH".

That is why the company has now started a scientific project that aims to research the alternatives.

For example: re-bind carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere.

Fürth: bind CO2 with the help of rock

The capture of CO2 in the air should work via "Enhanced Weathering", as the company writes on its website.

With the help of certain types of rock such as basalt or dunite.

The rock is distributed on arable land, for example, and should then react with the CO2 contained in the air.

This creates so-called “harmless carbonates” that fix the CO2 for thousands of years.

According to the company's deliberations, up to two tons of CO2 should be collected on arable land within five years.

Trial areas for this can be found in Greece, the Netherlands as well as Bremerhaven and also in Fürth *, as

Fürth: "Avoiding CO2 is not enough"

According to the experts from “Carbon Drawdown”, it is not enough just to reduce or avoid CO2 emissions.

It must also be fought against the already existing CO2.

Even with the smallest amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, it would get hotter, the website says.

"Even if we achieve 'Zero Emissions', the climate will not get colder - unless we actively pull the CO2 out of the air."

Since 2017, there have been more than 2500 studies on the "enhanced weathering" method, the researchers write.

The results are similar: it works, but more studies and experiments are needed.

"Carbon Drawdown" now wants to take care of that.
