The FEHD took another surprise operation today (28th) to crack down on licensed fresh provision shops suspected of selling frozen meat as fresh meat at Choi Ming Shopping Centre in Tseung Kwan O.
During the operation, about 184 kilograms of suspected frozen beef were seized in a licensed fresh provision shop. The beef was immediately sealed for further investigation and two beef samples were taken for preservative testing. If there is sufficient evidence, the department will initiate prosecution.

In addition, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department prosecuted the fresh provision store licensee for alleged violations of the Food Business Regulation on the cleanliness of the premises and the equipment used, and issued a verbal warning to him for violation of relevant licensing conditions.
The spokesman said that it is illegal for anyone to sell chilled or frozen meat without the approval. Once convicted, the maximum penalty is a fine of $50,000 and six months' imprisonment.
The Department will continue to closely monitor the fresh meat sold at the retail level and take stringent enforcement actions. If a fresh provision shop is found to be selling chilled or frozen meat as fresh meat, it will consider canceling its license.
