A spokesperson for the Centre for Food Safety said that six cases of food poisoning have been notified by the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health. The persons involved have eaten raw oysters at a restaurant in Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui.

The center has sent staff to investigate the restaurant involved and found that the two restaurants had sold raw oysters collected from Zwembesi Farm (PTY) LTD. in South Africa.

For the sake of prudence, the center immediately instructed the industry to suspend imports and sell all oysters produced in Zwembesi Farm (PTY) LTD. in South Africa in Hong Kong.

The center has requested all importers and relevant restaurants to immediately stop supplying and selling the involved oysters, and is tracking the distribution of the relevant products, and the industry should stop using or selling the relevant products.

The spokesman pointed out that since oysters only eat by filtering a large amount of seawater, if the waters where oysters are raised or collected contain pathogens, these substances will accumulate in the oysters.

Raw or undercooked oysters are a high-risk food. Pregnant women, young children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems and people with liver disease who are vulnerable to infection should avoid eating raw oysters.

The center will notify the South African authorities and the local industry, and will continue to follow up the incident and take appropriate actions to ensure food safety and public health.

The investigation continues.
