Syria and Jordan agree to develop cooperation in the fields of trade, energy, agriculture, water and transport

The expanded Syrian-Jordanian ministerial meetings, which were held over two days, concluded today in the Jordanian capital, Amman, with the aim of enhancing bilateral cooperation in many economic fields.

During the talks, the two sides reached common visions and understandings in order to enhance economic cooperation in the fields of trade, energy, agriculture, water and transport, in a manner that benefits both countries.

The ministers from both sides stressed the importance of developing a vision for raising the level of economic cooperation between the two countries, addressing any difficulties facing the movement of trade exchange and transport, and pushing towards strengthening partnership in the fields of energy, water and agriculture to serve the interests of each party.

The two sides discussed, during extensive meetings, which included all ministers from both sides, in addition to bilateral meetings that brought together both ministers and counterparts, to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the fields of trade, transport, electricity, agriculture and water resources.

In the field of trade and industry, the Syrian and Jordanian sides agreed to exchange lists of priority goods to enhance trade exchange to be studied in a way that achieves the common benefit of both countries. The executive procedures needed to be completed to restore the work of the Jordanian-Syrian free zone were also discussed.

In the field of water, it was agreed to reactivate the joint water committee to follow up the implementation of the agreement signed between the two countries in 1987, to activate the joint committees as soon as possible, and to cooperate to develop the utilization of the waters of the Yarmouk Basin.

In the field of transportation, ways of flowing goods and facilitating the movement of freight and transporting goods and passengers between the two countries were discussed, as well as studying the fees prescribed for trucks.

It was also announced that the Royal Jordanian Airlines would return to operate its flights to transport passengers between Syria and Jordan, starting from the third of next October. The conditions of the Jordanian-Syrian transport company were also discussed to find solutions to the problems it faces.

In the field of energy and electricity, they discussed aspects of joint cooperation between the two brotherly countries in the energy sector in general and the electricity sector in particular, ways to restart the Jordanian-Syrian electric linkage line, and the need to develop a clear road map to rehabilitate the damaged electrical network on the Syrian side.

The two sides agreed that the joint Syrian-Jordanian technical committee formed by the Syrian Ministry of Electricity and the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources would complete its work, which started last August.

In the agricultural field, it was agreed to exchange documents to develop the scientific, technical and agricultural cooperation agreement in all fields of research, plant and animal health. It was also agreed to exchange lists of agricultural commodities and the agricultural agenda between the two countries in preparation for regulating agricultural trade commodity exchange.

The Syrian-Jordanian ministerial meetings, which started yesterday, resumed earlier today with the participation of the Syrian side, which includes the Ministers of Economy and Foreign Trade, Dr. Muhammad Samer Al-Khalil, Water Resources, Eng. Tammam Raad, Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Engineer Muhammad Hassan Qatana, and Electricity, Engineer Ghassan Al-Zamil, in addition to their counterparts from the Jordanian side.
