Antisemitic graffiti was unveiled today (Tuesday) on barracks at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi extermination camp memorial site, according to the site's management, who condemned the act as "shocking".
The memorial site preserves the extermination camp set up on Polish soil by the Nazis during World War II. More than 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, perished in the gas chambers in the camp or as a result of famine, cold and disease.
As stated in a post posted on the memorial site on Twitter, the graffiti was written in English and German, and included two references from the Old Testament that are often used by anti-Semites.
"Such an offense against the memorial site is above all a scandalous attack against the symbol of one of the greatest tragedies in human history, and a most painful blow to the memory of all the victims of the Nazi Auschwitz-Birkenau camp," the memorial site tweeted.

Police have opened an investigation into the incident, examining a number of documentation and video footage from the incident, after which the graffiti is removed.
The management of the site added that the security measures at the site will be expanded, but it will not be possible to cover the entire memorial site in the near future.
